Sargent 8204 LSB Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 LSB brings together the proven engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset platform and the purposeful geometry of the LS Security Escutcheon paired with the B lever — a combination specified where controlled, single-point access defines the door's role. Built to ANSI F07 Storeroom/Closet function, the 8204 admits entry by key from the outside only, while the inside trim remains free at all times for unobstructed egress. The LS escutcheon forms a firm, close-fitting plate over the lock area of the door face, giving the trim a disciplined, architectural profile that reads cleanly on a hardware schedule. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1, and logged at 16 million cycles in UL testing, this lockset is a natural specification choice for storeroom, closet, and similarly controlled openings.
Storeroom/Closet Control — ANSI F07 Single-Cylinder Operation on the Sargent 8204
The 8204 is a key-in, always-locked storeroom function: the outside trim is locked at all times and yields only to a valid key, while the inside trim retracts the latchbolt freely without a key at any moment. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification — the 8204 is a purely mechanical, single-cylinder mortise lockset.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; without a key the outside lever will not operate. This enforces controlled access at every approach — entry cannot be achieved by lever pressure alone.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt at all times, requiring no credential for exit. This unconditional egress path is essential for life-safety compliance and is built into the ANSI F07 function itself.
- Auxiliary Deadlatch: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch works in concert with the primary latchbolt. Because it is also non-handed, it fits either door orientation without substitution, and it resists latchbolt manipulation when the door is closed.
- Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt has a 3/4" (19 mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that eases door closing under spring pressure. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi-function design — the same case that supports nine different ANSI functions — meaning replacement parts and service procedures are consistent across an entire hardware schedule built on the 8200 Series.
LS Security Escutcheon with B Lever — Trim Profile and Practical Notes
The LSB trim pairs the LS Security Escutcheon — a close-fitting escutcheon plate that covers the lock area of the door face — with the B lever. The result is a trim profile that presents a deliberate, institutional appearance on the schedule and keeps the lock area covered by a security escutcheon rather than an open rose.
The catalog states the security benefit directly: Cylinder is protected by the Escutcheon, and (4) Spanner security screws are exposed on inside trim standard. That pairing is the reason to specify LS — the cylinder sits behind the escutcheon plate rather than standing proud of a rose, and the fasteners left exposed on the inside take a spanner bit rather than a common driver.
- LS Security Escutcheon: The LS is a security escutcheon that covers the lock area of the door face. Note that freewheeling behavior is not a feature of this trim — that characteristic belongs to the separate FE trim; the LS is specified for its escutcheon coverage.
- Minimal Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. Because the inside B lever operates at the same low arc, the trim is practical for users exiting under load or in low-light conditions.
- Through-Bolted and Interchangeable Trim: To ensure proper alignment, the trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon mounting configurations. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies lever swap-outs and reduces installation variables on the door face.
- ADA Lever Form and Finish Selection: The B lever complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act — consult local authorities to verify applicability to your specific installation. Available finishes for this trim include 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series lockbody has completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement — with verification ID V584148. That margin is a meaningful indicator of long-term service life in high-traffic facilities.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The lockset is certified to and exceeds both operational and security Grade 1 with standard trims, the highest rating class under this standard.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Lock Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc-dichromate plated at 7/64" (3 mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: The lockset is UL and cUL Listed for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser-class doors. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C positive pressure fire testing, a requirement on many jurisdictional fire door schedules. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm listing on the installed unit.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options — Conventional Cylinders Only: This listing is offered with LC (Less Cylinder) or with a LA keyway conventional cylinder, brass, size #41 (1-1/8"). Neither LFIC nor SFIC interchangeable-core options are available on the LS escutcheon trim — specifiers standardising on an interchangeable-core key system should confirm this constraint before ordering. The lock can be masterkeyed or grand masterkeyed, and construction keying is available.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty is limited to replacement of the lockbody). The 8204 is a mechanical lockset with no electrical components, so the mechanical warranty is the applicable coverage for this product.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 LSB is factory-ordered to a 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset only — no alternative backset is available, so door prep must be laid out accordingly before ordering. Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057, and the door must provide a minimum 4-1/2" (114 mm) stile to accept the mortise case; narrower stiles cannot accommodate this lockset. The standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44 mm), though the 8200 Series is offered across a broader thickness range — consult the series template for non-standard door thicknesses.
The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case. The this trim is handed and must be specified as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at the time of order — trim handing cannot be changed in the field. Available finishes are 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. The broader 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, and push/pull ALP trim — available as separately specified options on applicable Series configurations. Lead time: factory order, 3–4 weeks.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
