Sargent 8204 LSA Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 LSA brings together the proven Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform and the LS Security Escutcheon with A lever in a storeroom/closet configuration built for demanding institutional and commercial environments. Governed by ANSI F07, the 8204 function keeps the outside trim locked at all times, permitting entry by key only, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely — the correct balance of controlled access and unimpeded egress for storerooms, equipment closets, and secure ancillary spaces. The LS security escutcheon covers the mortise prep area in the door face, and together with the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1 lock body it delivers a specification that satisfies both the security officer and the AHJ.
Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Outside Entry, Free Egress Always
The 8204 is a single-cylinder storeroom/closet function: the outside lever is locked at all times and a key is required to retract the latchbolt from that side, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt without a credential. The 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — it is purpose-built for spaces that must stay locked to unauthorized entrants yet allow occupants to leave instantly.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times — a key must be used to retract the latchbolt from the corridor side. Because there is no outside thumbturn or push-button, the door cannot be left unlocked from outside, which is exactly what a storeroom or secure closet application requires.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt at all times, with no credential or mode change needed. This separation of outside control from inside freedom is the defining characteristic of ANSI F07 and is critical wherever life-safety codes demand unrestricted egress.
- Auxiliary Deadlatch: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch deadlocks the latchbolt automatically when the door closes, preventing the latchbolt from being pushed back without operating the trim. Because it is stainless steel and non-handed, it resists corrosion and requires no handing selection of its own.
- Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt provides a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that reduces closing force against the strike. The lockbody is the 8200 Multi-Function design, meaning the same case can be re-configured to nine functions — a practical advantage when a project's program changes after hardware is on site.
LS Security Escutcheon with A Lever: Coverage Where the Door Face Needs It
The LSA trim pairs the LS Security Escutcheon — a security escutcheon that covers the lock area of the door face over the mortise prep — with the classic A lever. This trim is handed; specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering. The A lever's clean, architectural profile makes it at home in institutional corridors and commercial interiors alike.
The catalog states the security benefit directly: Cylinder is protected by the Escutcheon, and (4) Spanner security screws are exposed on inside trim standard. That pairing is the reason to specify LS — the cylinder sits behind the escutcheon plate rather than standing proud of a rose, and the fasteners left exposed on the inside take a spanner bit rather than a common driver.
- LS Security Escutcheon: The LS is a security escutcheon that covers the lock area of the door face over the mortise preparation. Note that this is not the freewheeling this trim is handed, you must specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order.
- 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt, reducing the force and arc a user needs to apply — a practical benefit in high-traffic corridors where doors cycle hundreds of times a day.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon mounting to ensure proper alignment. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies installation and reduces trim-side wear over time.
- ADA Lever Form and Finishes: The A lever complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities to confirm applicability for your jurisdiction. Six architectural finishes are offered: 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26).

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — 16 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement — with results verified under Verification ID V584148. That margin matters in high-traffic institutional settings where a lockset may see tens of thousands of cycles per year.
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational and Security Grade 1: Certified to and exceeding the highest ANSI/BHMA grade with standard trims, confirming both the operational durability and the security performance of the lock body in this configuration.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — supported by a heavy-duty wrought steel hub assembly and high-carbon steel spring cartridge for long-term cycle life.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Listing and Positive Pressure: Listed by UL and cUL to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label single (4×10) and double (8×10) three-hour fire doors and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm the listing in the field.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered with LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders, or factory-installed with the LA keyway in a standard brass #41 (1-1/8") cylinder. The LA keyway supports masterkeying and grand masterkeying; construction keying is also available. Important: LFIC and SFIC interchangeable cores are not available on this trim — if your project is standardized on an interchangeable core platform, this trim will not accommodate it and an alternate trim selection is required.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent's 10-year limited mechanical warranty covers the lock body. The lock body itself is field-reversible and can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — a genuine time-saver during installation or when doors are re-hung.

Ordering & Installation Information
The Sargent 8204 LSA requires door preparation to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The backset is 2-3/4" (70mm) only — no other backset is offered, so verify your door edge distance before ordering. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile width is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the mortise case. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is available for door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" — confirm with your distributor if a non-standard thickness is required.
The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but this trim is handed — you must specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when placing your order; an unspecified hand cannot be shipped. Cylinder options are LC (Less Cylinder) or LA keyway conventional cylinder; as noted above, no interchangeable core option exists for this trim. Two nickel silver keys are included with a keyed cylinder; a control key or emergency key must be ordered separately if required. Factory lead time is 3–4 weeks. For projects requiring MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical functions, or push/pull ALP trim, these are available as options or configurations within the broader Sargent 8200 Series — contact us to specify.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
