Sargent 8204 LNW Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 LNW brings the disciplined security of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform to storerooms, closets, and controlled-access spaces that demand reliable key-only entry with unrestricted inside egress. Classified ANSI F07 Storeroom or Closet function, the 8204 keeps the outside trim locked at all times — entry is by key only — while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely for immediate egress. The trim pairing is the LNW: a LN Rose at 2" diameter combined with the W lever. That compact 2" rose covers the absolute minimum of the door face, keeping sight lines clean on finished interiors while the W lever's generous contact surface meets the ergonomic demands of high-traffic institutional corridors. Certified ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1, this is a mechanical-only lockset with no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Only Entry, Always-Free Egress

The 8204 operates on a straightforward security premise: outside access is controlled entirely by key, inside egress is never impeded. There is no deadbolt and no thumbturn. A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch and a stainless anti-friction latchbolt work together inside a single multi-function lockbody to deliver that controlled-access behavior consistently across every cycle.

  • Key-Controlled Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times — only a valid key retracts the latchbolt from the exterior. This makes the 8204 the correct choice wherever a storeroom or closet must remain secured against unauthorized entry without any mechanical override on the outside.
  • Unimpeded Inside Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt, with no credential or tool required. Because free egress resists defeat from outside, the 8204 satisfies life-safety exit requirements at controlled-access interior doors.
  • Auxiliary Deadlatch — Stainless Steel, Non-Handed: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. Its role is to resist latchbolt manipulation: when the door closes and the deadlatch plunger is depressed by the strike, the latchbolt is deadlocked against retraction by anything other than the lever or key, providing a meaningful second line of latching security.
  • Anti-Friction Latchbolt & Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt with 3/4" (19 mm) throw incorporates an anti-friction feature that eases door closing under moderate misalignment. The lockbody itself is a multi-function design — Sargent notes it embodies nine functions in one body — so if a facility's access requirements evolve, the lockbody can be re-configured rather than replaced.

LNW Trim: 2" LN Rose with W Lever

Where architectural detailing calls for restrained hardware, the 2" diameter LN rose makes its point precisely: it covers only the cylinder area and nothing more, leaving the surrounding door face unobstructed. Paired with the W lever — a design notable for its wide, full-hand bearing surface — the combination delivers confident grip and clean proportion from any viewing angle. The W lever is non-handed, simplifying specification on mixed-swing openings.

  • Compact 2" Rose Footprint: The LN Rose measures 2" in diameter — among the smallest rose formats in the 8200 Series — so it occupies minimal door-face area. On wood-paneled doors or doors with applied mouldings, a smaller rose avoids visual conflict with the surrounding millwork while still housing the cylinder cleanly.
  • 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. Because the W lever's broad bearing surface distributes hand force over a wider grip area, even that modest rotation arc requires very little effort — a practical benefit on high-cycle storeroom doors.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case & Through-Bolted Trim: Lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the rose, keeping the trim assembly thin and the rose diameter at its stated 2". Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon formats, ensuring precise alignment and consistent torque transmission over the life of the installation.
  • Lever Handle Compliance & Finish Options: The W lever-handle configuration complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your jurisdiction and occupancy. The LNW trim is available in six architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times (Verification ID: V584148). For a storeroom door opened dozens of times daily, that margin translates directly into decades of reliable service.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 & Security Grade 1: Certified to the highest grade under the Series 1000 standard with standard trims. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify accordingly if Security Grade 1 is a project requirement.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated at 7/64" (3 mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — supported by a heavy-duty wrought steel hub assembly and high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior long-term cycle life.
  • UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Door & Positive Pressure Listed: UL and cUL Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors, stamped on the armored front. Meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies — qualification required on many stairwell and corridor applications.
  • Cylinder / Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway (standard, factory-installed, masterkeyable, two nickel-silver keys included); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. The brass cylinder is size #41 (1-1/8"). LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody), providing long-term assurance for institutional and commercial projects with extended maintenance cycles.

Ordering & Installation Information

Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057; confirm the correct cutout before installation. The 8204 LNW requires a 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset — no other backset is available — and a minimum 4-1/2" (114 mm) stile width; doors narrower than that stile minimum cannot accept this lockset. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44 mm), though the 8200 Series is offered for doors from 1-3/8" to 6" thick when specified accordingly. The lock body is field-reversible without removing parts or opening the case, accommodating last-minute handing changes on the jobsite. The W lever trim is non-handed — no handing selection is required when ordering. Six finishes are available: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. This item ships as a factory order with a 3–4 week lead time; plan procurement accordingly. The broader Sargent 8200 Series offers optional MicroShield® antimicrobial finish coating, electro-mechanical ElectroLynx® configurations, status indicators, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent or secure-fastener trim — all separately specified on applicable Series models.
