Sargent 8204 LJ Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8200 Series 8204 LJ brings the clean restraint of rose-format trim to a high-cycle, Grade 1 mortise lockset built for storeroom and closet doors in commercial and institutional construction. Where a full escutcheon plate dominates a door face, the L Rose (3-1/2" dia) with J lever keeps the sightline open while delivering the same ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational and Security Grade 1 performance as any trim in the 8200 family. Function 8204 (ANSI F07) defines a strict storeroom discipline: the outside lever is locked at all times and yields only to a key, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely — controlled entry, unimpeded egress. This is a mechanical, single-cylinder mortise lockset with no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Key-Controlled Entry

ANSI F07 defines a single, unambiguous access rule: entry is controlled by key from outside at all times, while egress from inside is always immediate. The 8204 enforces that rule through a stainless steel latchbolt, a stainless auxiliary deadlatch, and a multi-function lockbody — no modes to toggle, no occupancy indicator, no deadbolt.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a key retracts the latchbolt. Because there is no thumbturn and no inside-to-outside release mechanism, the secured side cannot be compromised by reaching through a door light or adjacent opening.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever retracts the latchbolt unconditionally. This means occupants are never trapped — a critical life-safety characteristic for storeroom and closet doors in occupied buildings.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. It prevents the latchbolt from being pushed back by a card or thin tool when the door is closed, keeping the door positively latched between entries.
  • Multi-Function Lockbody: The 8200 Series lockbody is the same unit across nine functions. That single-body architecture mea one lockbody covers nine functions, so a single case can be stocked instead of nine.

L Rose (3-1/2" dia) and J Lever Trim

The L Rose at 3-1/2" diameter frames the J lever with a considered, generous footprint — less visual mass on the door face than a full escutcheon while still fully covering the mortise prep. The J lever offers a substantial, ergonomic grip profile that complements the rose's proportions and suits corridors and storage areas where a clean, professional appearance is expected.

  • Low-Effort Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt. That reduced arc lowers the operating force needed, which supports ease of use across a wide range of users — the lever complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your jurisdiction.
  • Non-Handed Trim: The J lever trim is non-handed, so no handing selection is required when ordering. Combined with the field-reversible lock body, the assembly can be installed on doors of any swing without stocking separate left- and right-hand trim sets.
  • Through-Bolted and Fully Interchangeable: Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies trim removal and reinstallation in the field without disturbing the spring mechanism.
  • Six Architectural Finishes: Available in 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome — a range that covers contemporary, traditional, and industrial palettes across commercial interiors.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Key outside retracts latchbolt
  • Trim outside locked at all times
  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Durability: The 8200 Series lockbody completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148) — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement. That margin directly translates to reduced maintenance intervention over the life of a high-traffic installation.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Grade 1: Certified to Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, the highest classification under that standard. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options (offered on this listing) do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify a standard keyed cylinder when Security Grade 1 is a contract requirement.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Lock Case: The case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated at 7/64" (3 mm) thickness. Cold forged steel hubs back the lever, and a high-carbon steel spring cartridge supports the cycle life the lockbody is rated for.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing: UL and cUL Listed for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double 3-hour fire doors and lesser classifications under US and Canadian safety standards. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements — the armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing at the door.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cores; LA Keyway with standard keyed cylinder (masterkeying and grand masterkeying available; two nickel silver keys included); 60 – LFIC Less Core; and 70 – SFIC Less Core. LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty. The 8204 is a fully mechanical lockset — it has no electrification — and the warranty covers the lockbody replacement accordingly.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 LJ mortise lockset requires door prep per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The lockbody operates at a 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset only — no other backset is available — and a 4-1/2" (114 mm) minimum stile is required; verify both at the door schedule before ordering. Standard installation is for 1-3/4" (44 mm) thick doors; the 8200 Series is offered for door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" where applicable. The lock body is field reversible without opening the lock case; the J lever trim is non-handed and requires no separate handing selection. Select from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core). The 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent secure-fastener trim as separately specified series options. Lead time: factory order, 3–4 weeks.
