Sargent 8204 LE1W Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Specified by architects and facility managers who demand both controlled access and reliable egress, the Sargent 8204 LE1W brings together the proven Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform with a clean LE1 Escutcheon and W lever. The 8204 Storeroom/Closet function (ANSI F07) admits only keyholders from outside while keeping the inside lever permanently free for immediate egress — a configuration suited to stock rooms, storage corridors, utility spaces, and similar controlled-access openings. Backed by ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 certification and a heavy-duty 8200 Series lock body tested to 16 million cycles, this trim-and-function combination fits naturally into an escutcheon-trim hardware schedule without special coordination.

8204 Storeroom/Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Unconditional Egress

The 8204 defines a clear security boundary: the outside trim remains locked at all times, so entry requires a key on every approach, while the inside lever retracts the latchbolt freely without a key or credential. That pairing — strict outside control, unconditional inside egress — is precisely what ANSI F07 codifies for storeroom and closet openings.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; the outside trim is locked at all times and cannot be turned without a valid key. There is no thumbturn, no deadbolt, and no inside-release override of the outside lock status.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever retracts the latchbolt on every approach, regardless of how the outside is keyed. Because egress requires no credential, the 8204 is appropriate where occupant exit must never be impeded.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes, it deadlocks the latchbolt automatically, preventing the latch from being slipped with a card or thin tool — a meaningful layer of passive security that requires no action from the user.
  • Anti-Friction One-Piece Latchbolt: The latchbolt is a one-piece stainless steel anti-friction design with a 3/4" (19mm) throw, so the door closes with minimal resistance and the latch seats positively every time. The Multi-Function 8200/7800 lockbody supports nine functions in one case, meaning this 8204 body can be reordered in a different function without changing the door preparation.

LE1 Escutcheon with W Lever — Trim Code LE1W

The LE1W trim pairs the LE1 escutcheon carrier with the W lever, a combination sized to present a substantial bearing surface at the door face. Because the LE1 is an escutcheon format, it covers the mortise cutout area fully, giving the hardware a finished, coordinated appearance consistent with an escutcheon-based hardware schedule throughout a project.

  • 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. That shallow arc reduces the force and range of motion a user must apply — a practical benefit at high-traffic doors and consistent with lever trim that complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities for specific requirements.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: To ensure proper alignment, the W lever is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon trim formats within the 8200 Series. That interchangeability simplifies hardware-schedule coordination when a project mixes rose and escutcheon carriers across different openings.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim rose or escutcheon. Keeping the spring mechanism inside the case means trim removal during maintenance or finish replacement does not disturb the spring assembly, reducing the risk of mis-assembly in the field.
  • Handing and Finishes: This trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering. Six architectural finishes are offered: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Key outside retracts latchbolt
  • Trim outside locked at all times
  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Grade 1: Certified to Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims — the highest ANSI/BHMA classification for mortise locksets, confirming both cycle performance and resistance standards have been independently verified.
  • 16 Million Cycle Durability: The 8200 Series completed a UL "above and beyond" cycle test at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. That margin directly supports long service intervals in high-traffic facilities.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Lock Case: The case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc-dichromate plated, with a wall thickness of 7/64" (3mm) (.109"). Cold forged steel hubs — not sintered iron — drive the lever mechanism, and a high-carbon steel spring cartridge supports the rated cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Listed + UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label single (4" x 10") and double (8" x 10") three-hour fire doors and lesser-class doors. The lock also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure fire test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the F designation and UL symbol to confirm listing in the field.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is available as LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway (the standard keyway, masterkey- and grand-masterkey-capable), 60 (LFIC Less Core), or 70 (SFIC Less Core). Note: LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements. The standard cylinder is brass, size #41 (1-1/8").
  • 10-Year Mechanical Warranty + Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the lock body with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is field-reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — while the LE1 escutcheon trim carries its own handing and must be specified at the time of order.

Ordering & Installation Information

Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The 2-3/4" (70mm) backset is the only backset available on the 8200 Series mortise body; confirm rough frame and door edge allow this dimension before submitting. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile width is required — narrower stiles will not accommodate the lock case. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm), though the 8200 Series is offered for doors from 1-3/8" to 6" thick; non-standard thicknesses require separate specification. The lock body is field-reversible without opening the case, but this trim is handed — order lead hand (LH / RH / LHR / RHR) at the time of purchase. Six finishes are offered: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Cylinder options for this listing are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). Lead time is 3–4 weeks as a factory order. The broader 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, and vandalism-deterrent secure-fastener trim — specify those options separately on the applicable 8200 Series configurations.
