Sargent 8204 LE1B Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Specifying controlled-access hardware for storerooms, supply closets, and similar restricted areas demands a lockset that reads cleanly on a hardware schedule and performs without compromise in the field. The Sargent 8200 Series 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) mortise lockset with LE1B trim — pairing the LE1 Escutcheon carrier with the B lever — answers both requirements. Entry is controlled exclusively by key from the outside, while occupants always exit freely without a credential. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims, and completed at 16 million cycles, this mechanical lockset carries the durability and fire-rating credentials that architects and facility managers rely on when building or reviewing a hardware schedule.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Single-Cylinder Control

The 8204 operates on a straightforward access-control principle: the outside trim is locked at all times and yields only to a key, while the inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — the function is purpose-built for spaces where unrestricted egress and keyed-only entry are the entire requirement.

  • Keyed Entry, Outside Only: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; without a key, the outside trim remains locked at all times. Because no inside cylinder is required, the 8204 ships with a single #41 (1-1/8") brass cylinder — specifying a second cylinder for the inside is neither necessary nor applicable on this single-cylinder function.
  • Always-Free Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt in every condition — there is no mode in which an occupant can be trapped. This unconditional egress path is fundamental to life-safety compliance for occupied storerooms and utility spaces.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, meaning it installs identically regardless of door swing. It prevents the latchbolt from being pushed back by shimming when the door is closed, adding a positive latching condition that requires neither a deadbolt nor a separate lockbody.
  • Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt delivers a 3/4" (19mm) throw with an anti-friction design that eases door closing under side-load conditions. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi one lockbody covers nine functions, so a single case can be stocked instead of nine.

LE1 Escutcheon with B Lever — Trim Profile for the Hardware Schedule

The LE1B trim combines the LE1 Escutcheon carrier with the B lever design. The escutcheon format frames the lever and cylinder within a defined plate, giving the hardware schedule a precise visual reference and making finish coordination across a project straightforward. The this trim is handed — handing must be specified at order entry.

  • Handed Escutcheon — Order with Handing Declared: This trim is handed; specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when placing the order. The lock body itself is field-reversible without opening the case, but the escutcheon trim follows its own handing rule — these are two separate considerations and must not be treated as one.
  • 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. That reduced arc matters on a hardware schedule because it directly supports lever usability — the lever complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities regarding applicability to your specific jurisdiction and installation.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, knobs, and levers are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment and consistent torque transfer. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies trim removal and reinstallation during maintenance without disturbing the spring mechanism.
  • Six Architectural Finishes: The LE1B trim is available in 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26) — a range that covers the most common architectural palettes and allows finish-matching across an entire hardware schedule.

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Durability (Verification ID V584148): The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement — confirming a service life appropriate for high-traffic institutional and commercial applications.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational and Security Grade 1: Certified to and exceeding Grade 1 in both operational and security categories with standard trims. Note that LFIC (60) and SFIC (70) less-core options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify the LC or LA keyway options where Security Grade 1 must be maintained.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc Dichromate-Plated Steel Case: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated at 7/64" (3mm) /.109" thickness, providing a robust enclosure for the lockbody mechanism.
  • Cold Forged Steel Hubs and High Carbon Steel Spring Cartridge: The 8200 Series uses cold forged steel hubs — not sintered iron — paired with a high carbon steel spring cartridge, a combination the catalog cites as the basis for the series' superior strength and cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser classifications; meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing in the field.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody), providing long-term assurance for facility managers specifying hardware on a life-cycle cost basis.

Ordering & Installation Information

Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The lockset is designed for 1-3/4" (44mm) thick doors as standard (the 8200 Series is offered for door thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" — consult factory for non-standard thickness). Backset is 2-3/4" (70mm) only — no alternative backset is offered, so door location of the edge bore must be confirmed before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile width is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the lockbody.

The lock body is field-reversible without removing parts or opening the case. However, this trim is handed and must be ordered as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR — handing cannot be changed in the field. Cylinder options on this listing are: LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway, 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core); note that LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. Two nickel silver keys are included with keyed cylinders; construction keying and masterkeying are available. The 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical configurations, and vandalism-deterrent trim options — available as separately specified series-level configurations. This item is a factory order with a 3–4 week lead time.
