Sargent 8204 LA Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
Smooth operation under constant use is the defining demand on any storeroom or closet lock — and the Sargent 8200 Series 8204 with LA trim (L Rose 3-1/2" dia × A lever) is built to meet it shift after shift. Governing access to storerooms, closets, and similarly controlled spaces, the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) keeps the outside trim locked at all times, requires a key to retract the latchbolt from outside, and allows free egress from inside at any moment — no key, no credentials, no delay. Sargent's patented mortise lockbody, refined over a century of manufacturing experience, delivers that straightforward security logic in a platform certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1. The round 3-1/2" L Rose and classic A lever bring a clean, institutional profile suited to commercial and public-building interiors.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Key-Only Outside Entry
The 8204 (ANSI F07) defines a straightforward access hierarchy: outside trim is locked at all times and yields only to a key, while inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely. A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch and a one-piece anti-friction stainless latch back up that logic mechanically, so the door behaves exactly the same way on the ten-thousandth cycle as it did on the first.
- Key-controlled outside entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder is the only way to retract the latchbolt from the corridor side — the outside trim is locked at all times and cannot be turned without it. This is the correct and code-recognized mechanism for storerooms, supply closets, and any space requiring controlled access with free egress.
- Always-free inside egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt without a key or credential. No occupant can be inadvertently locked in, which matters equally for life-safety compliance and for day-to-day staff convenience in high-traffic utility spaces.
- Stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch: The non-handed auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and activates automatically when the door closes against the strike. It deadlocks the latchbolt against push-in attempts without requiring any secondary manual action from the user.
- One-piece anti-friction stainless latch: The latchbolt is a single-piece stainless steel anti-friction design with a 3/4" (19 mm) throw. The anti-friction feature reduces the operating force needed to release the latch against a closed stop, which is exactly why only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract it — a direct benefit to users carrying loads through storeroom doorways.
LA Trim — L Rose (3-1/2" dia) × A Lever
The LA trim pairs a 3-1/2" diameter round L Rose with the A lever — a combination that reads as straightforwardly institutional without competing with surrounding architectural finishes. Lever springs are housed entirely inside the lock case rather than in the trim itself, which simplifies trim removal and reinstallation in the field without disturbing spring tension.
- 30-degree lever rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. For staff moving between a stockroom and a corridor dozens of times a day, that reduced arc translates directly to lower fatigue and faster throughput at the door.
- Through-bolted, fully interchangeable trim: Trim, including this rose and lever, is through-bolted to ensure proper alignment and is fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations within the 8200 Series — a specifier advantage when standardizing hardware across a project with mixed trim styles.
- ADA lever compliance: The A lever is designed to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your specific installation and jurisdiction.
- Six architectural finishes: LA trim is offered in 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 630 Satin Stainless (US32D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26) — a range that spans contemporary, traditional, and institutional finish palettes.

Key Product Features
- 16 Million Cycle Verification — ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles, exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement by 16 times (Verification ID: V584148). The 8204 LA is certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims.
- 12-Gauge Zinc Dichromate Welded Steel Case: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, with a 7/64" (3 mm) wall thickness. That case construction is the structural shell that contains and protects all operating components for the life of the lock.
- Cold Forged Steel Hubs and High-Carbon Steel Spring Cartridge: The 8200 Series uses cold forged steel hubs — distinct from the sintered iron copper-infiltrated hubs used in the 7800 line — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength and cycle life.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure Rated: The 8200 Series lockbody is UL and cUL Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 3-hour fire doors (4×10 single and 8×10 double), with the F stamp and UL symbol on the armored front confirming the listing. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options for This Listing: Available as LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway (standard 6-pin brass, #41 / 1-1/8" cylinder, masterkey- and grand-masterkey-capable with construction keying available), 60 — LFIC Less Core, or 70 — SFIC Less Core. Note: LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is re-handed in the field without removing parts or opening the lock case, reducing installation time and minimizing SKU complexity on projects with mixed-hand openings.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 LA mortise lockset installs to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 door prep on doors 1-3/4" (44 mm) thick standard, with a fixed 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset — no adjustable backset option is available, so confirm rough-frame and door-edge dimensions before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114 mm) minimum stile is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the mortise case. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but A lever trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order, as handing cannot be changed in the field for the trim. Select from six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options for this listing are LC, LA Keyway, 60 (LFIC Less Core), or 70 (SFIC Less Core); LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet Security Grade 1. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield® antimicrobial coating, electro-mechanical ElectroLynx® configurations, status indicators, and security trim variants — consult DoorwaysPlus for those separately specified configurations. Lead time: factory order, 3–4 weeks.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
