Sargent 8204 FEW Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 FEW brings the full architectural weight of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform to storeroom and closet openings that demand both presence and accountability. Where a rose-mount trim recedes into the door face, the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon makes a deliberate statement — its forged brass plate commanding the lock area with a bearing surface proportioned for institutional corridors, back-of-house passages, and any opening where the hardware must read as intentional rather than incidental. Paired with the broad, sweep-friendly W lever, this trim delivers the 8204 Storeroom / Closet function (ANSI F07): key-controlled outside entry, always-free inside egress, and an auxiliary deadlatch that holds the door positively latched. Five architectural finishes and a factory lead time of 3–4 weeks make it a workable specification for new construction and renovation projects alike.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07 Key-Only Outside Control

The 8204 is a single-cylinder storeroom function: the outside trim is locked at all times and yields only to a key, while the inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no occupancy indicator, and no electrification — the 8204 is a purely mechanical, key-controlled access function suited to storerooms, supply closets, and secure utility spaces.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; the outside lever is locked at all times and cannot be turned without the key. This keeps the space secured against unauthorised entry without requiring a separate deadbolt throw.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, ensuring occupants can exit at any time without a key. This unconditional egress path is the defining characteristic of an ANSI F07 storeroom function and a fundamental life-safety requirement for occupied spaces.
  • Auxiliary Deadlatch: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch rides alongside the primary latchbolt. When the door closes fully, the deadlatch is depressed by the strike, preventing the latchbolt from being pushed back by shimming or slipping — keeping the door positively secured in the frame.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt with Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latch has a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction tip that eases door closing against a loaded frame. The lockbody itself is the 8200 Series multi-function case — the same chassis supports nine ANSI functions, so the hardware infrastructure in the opening is not compromised by a single-function choice.

FE Freewheeling Escutcheon with W Lever — Institutional Security Trim

The FE Freewheeling Escutcheon is Sargent's purpose-built response to lever abuse in high-traffic and vandalism-prone environments. Its forged brass outside escutcheon covers the lock area with a plate engineered to resist the forces applied at exterior and semi-public openings. The W lever's generous, open-arc profile pairs with the escutcheon's bearing surface to produce a trim that performs as visibly as it functions.

  • Freewheeling Outside Lever — 70-Degree Swing: In the locked mode the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees and automatically self-returns to its original position. Because no force is transmitted to the lock mechanism when the lever is torqued without a key, there is nothing to reset after a vandalism attempt — the trim simply returns and is ready for normal use.
  • Forged Brass Outside Escutcheon: The outside escutcheon is forged brass, providing added protection against vandalism. This trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order; this trim does not reverse in the field the way the lock body does.
  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation and Lever Springs Inside the Case: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt, reducing the effort a user must apply. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which simplifies trim installation and keeps the spring mechanism protected from the wear and environment of the door face.
  • ADA Lever Design and Finish Options: The 8204 FEW complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your jurisdiction and occupancy. The W lever is available in five architectural finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome. Note that 32 and 32D finishes are not available on FE freewheeling trim.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Trim outside locked at all times
  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed a UL "above and beyond" cycle test at 16 million cycles — 16 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 minimum requirement (Verification ID: V584148). For a storeroom lock cycled dozens of times per day, this margin translates directly into a longer service interval.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified with standard trims. Note: LFIC (option 60) and SFIC (option 70) cylinders do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements per the catalog; specify accordingly where Security Grade 1 must be maintained end-to-end.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — backed by a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for sustained cycle life.
  • UL / cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing in the field.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cores; LA Keyway (the standard Sargent keyway, masterkey- and grand-masterkey-capable); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. Two nickel silver keys are supplied with keyed cylinders; construction keying is available.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the case — reducing installation time and eliminating the need to stock separate handing SKUs at the job site.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 FEW installs to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 door prep on doors 1-3/4" (44mm) thick standard; for 2" (51mm) or 2-1/4" (57mm) thick doors, specify the door thickness on the order. FE freewheeling trim is designed for 1-3/4" doors as standard, with thicker door options available. The fixed 2-3/4" (70mm) backset is the only backset offered — confirm the door and frame are prepped accordingly before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile is required. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case; however, this trim is handed — order must specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR. Outside cylinder is the longer #46 (1-3/4"): because the outside escutcheon is heavier forged brass, the outside cylinder must be the #46 — a standard #41 cylinder will not fit correctly on the outside. Cylinder options: LC, LA Keyway, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core). Available in five finishes listed above. Factory lead time is 3–4 weeks. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers MicroShield® antimicrobial finish coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx® electro-mechanical configurations, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent secure fasteners as separately specified options on applicable configurations.
