Sargent 8204 FEP Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 FEP is a Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset configured for the Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) and dressed in FEP trim — a FE Freewheeling Escutcheon paired with the P lever. The escutcheon plate is forged brass, providing a robust, door-reinforcing mounting surface purpose-built for locations where abuse or vandalism is a real operational risk. Outside entry is by key only; the inside lever always retracts the latch freely, ensuring unobstructed egress at all times. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no occupancy indicator, and no electrification on this unit — a deliberate, code-appropriate configuration for storerooms, closets, and secured back-of-house doors that demand controlled single-point entry without complexity.

Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Only Outside Entry with Free Inside Egress

The 8204 ANSI F07 function keeps the outside trim locked at all times — only a key retracts the latch from outside — while the inside lever always operates freely. This one-way access model is the correct mechanical choice for storerooms, supply closets, and any secured door where occupants must always be able to exit without a key.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside lever is locked at all times; only a valid key retracts the latchbolt from the exterior. Because there is no thumbturn and no inside cylinder, there is no mechanism for an occupant to lock themselves in or inadvertently leave the door secured against re-entry.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever retracts the latchbolt at all times with no unlocking step required. This unconditional egress path is the defining characteristic of the storeroom function and is appropriate where life-safety codes require free exit from secured utility and storage spaces.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. It deadlocks the latchbolt automatically when the door closes against the strike, preventing the latch from being pushed back by shimming or slipping — a meaningful day-to-day security benefit that requires no action from the user.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latch: The one-piece latchbolt delivers a 3/4" (19mm) throw and is reversible, so it accommodates door handing changes without replacing hardware. The anti-friction feature reduces the closing force required to cam the latch past the strike lip, extending both latch and strike service life on high-traffic doors.

FE Freewheeling Escutcheon & P Lever: A Forged Brass Mounting Plate Engineered for Vandalism-Prone Environments

The FE Freewheeling Escutcheon is forged brass — heavier and more rigid than a standard escutcheon — and is specifically designed for schools, universities, public buildings, business back doors, and exterior doors where abusive force may be applied to the outside lever. The P lever's return-to-door geometry keeps projection compact and meets the California State Reference Fire Code.

  • Freewheeling Outside Lever Action: In the locked mode the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees and automatically returns to its original position. Because the lever spins rather than binding, a forced-rotation attempt cannot stress the spindle or lock mechanism — and the self-returning action eliminates any need to reset the trim after a vandalism attempt.
  • P Lever Return Geometry & ADA Compliance: The P lever has a lever return within 1/2" (13mm) of the door face, minimizing projection and reducing the leverage available to abusive force. The trim complies with the American Disability Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability under your jurisdiction's adopted code.
  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation & Internal Lever Springs: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation are required to retract the latchbolt, reducing hand-force demand on every operation. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, so trim removal for maintenance or finish change does not disturb the spring mechanism.
  • Through-Bolted Trim & Stainless Steel Lever Bushing: Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations to ensure proper alignment. The stainless steel lever bushing at the pivot point protects against wear at the highest-stress location in the trim assembly, supporting long service life in high-cycle installations.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 & Security Grade 1: The 8204 FEP with standard cylinder is certified to and exceeds both operational and security Grade 1 requirements. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify LA keyway or Less Cylinder if Security Grade 1 is required.
  • 16 Million Cycle Durability (Verification ID: V584148): The 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — 16 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement. For a high-traffic storeroom door, that margin translates directly into reduced replacement and maintenance cost over the building's service life.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Wrought Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series uses cold forged steel hubs — not sintered iron — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength throughout the lockbody's service life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Rating & Positive Pressure Compliance: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing in the field.
  • Cylinder & Keyway Options for This Listing: Four options are offered: LC (Less Cylinder), LA (LA Keyway, masterkeying and grand masterkeying available), 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core). LFIC (60) and SFIC (70) options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements. Two nickel silver keys are included with keyed cylinders; construction keying is available.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty & Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — simplifying installation corrections and future door reconfigurations.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 FEP requires a door prepared to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057, with a fixed 2-3/4" (70mm) backset and a 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile — both are hard constraints, not adjustable in the field. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm); for 2" (51mm) or 2-1/4" (57mm) doors, specify door thickness at time of order. The lock body is field reversible, but this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering. Because the outside escutcheon is heavier forged brass, the outside cylinder is the longer #46 (1-3/4"); ordering a #41 for the outside of this trim will result in an incorrect fit. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core); LFIC and SFIC do not meet Security Grade 1. Available finishes: 626, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. This is a factory order item with a lead time of 3–4 weeks. The broader 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical functions, status indicators, and push/pull ALP trim as separately specified options.
