Sargent 8204 FEJ Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Specified for storeroom and closet applications where controlled entry and reliable egress define the security requirement, the Sargent 8204 FEJ brings together the proven architecture of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset with trim purpose-built for high-abuse environments. The 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) permits key-only entry from the outside while keeping the inside lever always free for immediate egress — no credential required to exit. Trim code FEJ pairs the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon — a forged brass outside escutcheon with a freely rotating outside lever — with the J lever, a design whose return falls within 1/2" (13mm) of the door face. For architects and specifiers coordinating an escutcheon-trim hardware schedule, the FEJ is the combination that delivers vandalism-resistant outside trim and a clean lever profile within a single, Grade 1-certified unit.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Only Entry, Always-Free Egress

The 8204 (ANSI F07) is a single-cylinder storeroom function: the outside trim remains locked at all times and retracts the latchbolt only by key, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely. The 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no occupancy indicator, and no electrification — it is a purely mechanical, key-outside-only lockset.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a valid key retracts the latchbolt from the outside. This makes the 8204 the correct function for storerooms and closets where access must be controlled without exception, and where no inside release of the outside trim is required or desired.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt, independent of the locked status of the outside trim. Occupants are never trapped — egress is immediate and requires no key or credential.
  • Auxiliary Deadlatch: The stainless steel, non-handed auxiliary deadlatch deadlocks the latchbolt when the door is closed, preventing the latchbolt from being retracted by shimming or slipping. Because the deadlatch is non-handed, it functions correctly on doors of any handing without adjustment.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latch & Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19mm) projection and an anti-friction feature that reduces closing resistance. The lockbody is Sargent's multi-function 8200/7800 platform — the same case supports nine distinct functions — so replacement or re-specification to a different function does not require a new door preparation.

FE Freewheeling Escutcheon with J Lever: Vandalism-Resistant Outside Trim

The FE Freewheeling Escutcheon is engineered specifically for areas susceptible to vandalism — schools, universities, public buildings, business back doors, and exterior doors where abusive force may be applied to the outside lever. The J lever completes the assembly with a lever return that falls within 1/2" (13mm) of the door face, keeping the outside profile compact and meeting the California State Reference Fire Code.

  • Freewheeling Outside Lever — 70-Degree Free Swing: In the locked mode the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees and automatically returns to its original position. Because no mechanism is damaged when force is applied, there is nothing to reset after a vandalism attempt — a practical advantage in high-traffic or unsupervised locations where service calls are costly.
  • Forged Brass Outside Escutcheon with Stainless Steel Lever Bushing: The outside escutcheon is forged brass, which provides added protection against vandalism. A stainless steel lever bushing at the pivot point protects against wear over the life of the trim. Because the outside escutcheon is this heavier forged brass construction, the outside cylinder is the longer #46 (1-3/4") — not the standard #41 — and specifiers must call out the #46 when ordering the outside cylinder to avoid a short-cylinder mismatch.
  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation & ADA Lever Design: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt, reducing the effort needed to operate the door. The J lever complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act; consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your specific project and jurisdiction. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case, simplifying installation and protecting the spring mechanism.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim & Door Thickness Range: Trim, levers, and escutcheons are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment across a hardware schedule. FEJ trim is standard for 1-3/4" (44mm) doors; for 2" (51mm) or 2-1/4" (57mm) thick doors, door thickness must be specified at time of order. Note that the FE escutcheon trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

  • Key outside retracts latchbolt
  • Trim outside locked at all times
  • Trim inside always retracts latchbolt
  • Auxiliary deadlatch
  • A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 FEJ is certified to and exceeds ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims. Note: LFIC cylinder configurations do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify accordingly when Grade 1 security certification is a project requirement.
  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series has completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement — with verification ID V584148. This cycle margin directly supports long service intervals in high-use institutional and commercial applications.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Wrought Steel Case: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel with zinc dichromate plating, at a measured thickness of 7/64" (3mm) /.109". Cold forged steel hubs — the specification for the 8200 Series — paired with heavy-duty wrought steel hubs and a high carbon steel spring cartridge provide superior strength and cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing & Positive Pressure: The 8204 is UL and cUL Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4x10 single and 8x10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm the listing in the field.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in three cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder, for owner-supplied or existing cylinders), LA Keyway (standard 6-pin brass cylinder, masterkeying and grand masterkeying available, construction keying available, two nickel silver keys supplied), and 60 — LFIC Less Core (Large Format Interchangeable Core housing, less core, for owner-supplied LFIC cores). SFIC is not available on this trim. LFIC configurations do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty is limited to replacement of the lockbody). The field-reversible lock body — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reduces installation and re-handing labor on the job site.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 FEJ requires door prep ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 and a fixed 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available, so confirm rough frame dimensions before finalizing the hardware schedule. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the mortise case. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR on every line item. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm); for 2" or 2-1/4" doors, indicate the door thickness on the order. Available finishes for this listing: 626 (US26D Satin Chrome), 613E (US10BE Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal), 605 (US3 Polished Brass), 612 (US10 Satin Bronze), and 625 (US26 Polished Chrome). Cylinder options are LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway, and 60 (LFIC Less Core). The broader Sargent 8200 Series offers optional MicroShield® antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx® electro-mechanical configurations, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent or secure-fastener trim — consult the series catalog for separately specified configurations. Lead time: factory order, 3–4 weeks.
