Sargent 8204 FEF Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 FEF Trim Mortise Lockset pairs the trusted engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series with a purpose-built trim configuration for doors that face daily punishment. Configured to the 8204 Storeroom/Closet function (ANSI F07), it delivers key-controlled outside entry while keeping inside egress always free — the correct access model for storerooms, supply closets, and secure corridors in institutional and commercial facilities. The FEF trim combines the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon — forged brass, outside — with the clean, rectilinear F lever, a pairing engineered to hold its finish and its form in locations where lever abuse and repeated impact are routine. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1, this lockset is a long-term specification choice for architects and facility managers who cannot afford repeated trim replacements.

8204 Storeroom/Closet Function — ANSI F07 Key-Only Outside Entry with Always-Free Inside Egress

The 8204 is a single-cylinder storeroom function: the outside trim is locked at all times and only a key retracts the latchbolt from that side, while the inside trim always retracts the latch freely. The 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — it is the correct function for controlled-access storage and service spaces where inside egress must never be impeded.

  • Key-Controlled Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt; without a key, the outside trim remains locked at all times. This enforces access control at every approach without requiring staff to manually lock the door after each use.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim retracts the latchbolt at all times, unconditionally. Occupants can exit without a key, a credential, or any special action — an essential life-safety characteristic for occupied storerooms and utility spaces.
  • Auxiliary Deadlatch: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch runs alongside the latchbolt. Because it is non-handed, it installs correctly on doors of any swing direction; its function is to resist the latchbolt being pushed back by lateral force once the door is closed.
  • Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt provides a 3/4" (19mm) throw with an anti-friction tip to ease door closing under load. The lockbody is Sargent's multi-function design — a single case that can be reconfigured to nine different functions, giving facility managers flexibility if door usage requirements change in the future.

FE Freewheeling Escutcheon and F Lever — Abuse-Resistant Trim for High-Traffic and Vandalism-Prone Locations

The FEF trim is designed specifically for areas susceptible to vandalism — schools, universities, public buildings, and exterior or back-of-house doors where excessive force is routinely applied. The forged brass outside escutcheon provides added protection against vandalism, and the freewheeling lever action means an abusive downward force on the lever causes no damage because the lever simply swings freely rather than transmitting force into the mechanism.

  • Freewheeling Lever Action: In the locked mode, the outside F lever swings freely down to 70 degrees and automatically returns to its original position. Because no mechanical engagement occurs, there is nothing to reset after a vandalism attempt — the lever's self-returning action preserves both appearance and operability.
  • Forged Brass Escutcheon and Stainless Steel Lever Bushing: The outside escutcheon is forged brass, which provides added protection against vandalism, and it is paired with a stainless steel lever bushing that protects against wear at the pivot point — two details that work together to maintain the trim's appearance and smooth operation over years of heavy use.
  • Cylinder Size — Order the Correct #46: Because the outside escutcheon is heavier forged brass and of greater depth than a standard rose, the outside cylinder must be the longer #46 (1-3/4"). A buyer who orders a short #41 for the outside will come up short — specify #46 for the outside cylinder on all FEF trim orders.
  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation, Through-Bolted Trim, and ADA Lever Form: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt, reducing the effort needed to operate the door. Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations to ensure proper alignment. The F lever complies with the American Disability Act lever-handle form — consult local authorities to confirm that the complete installation meets jurisdictional accessibility requirements.

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL above-and-beyond cycle testing at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148) — exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times. That margin translates directly to a lower lifetime replacement cost on high-traffic doors.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified to the highest commercial mortise lock standard with standard trims. Note: the LFIC less-core (option 60) and SFIC less-core (option 70) configurations available on this listing do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Steel Case and Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc-dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) wall thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength and cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Rating and Positive Pressure Certification: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing at installation.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered with LC (Less Cylinder), LA Keyway, 60 (LFIC Less Core), or 70 (SFIC Less Core). The LA keyway supports masterkeying and grand masterkeying; construction keying is available. Two nickel silver keys are supplied with keyed cylinders. A control key or emergency key must be ordered separately if required.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — it can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — streamlining both initial installation and future door reconfiguration.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 FEF mortise lockset requires door prep per ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The backset is fixed at 2-3/4" (70mm) — confirm this dimension against your door and frame before ordering. A minimum stile width of 4-1/2" (114mm) is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the lock case. The lock body is field reversible without opening the lock case; however, this trim is handed and must be specified as LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering — handing the trim incorrectly cannot be corrected in the field. This listing is standard for 1-3/4" (44mm) doors; 2" (51mm) and 2-1/4" (57mm) door thicknesses are available but must be specified on the order. Available finishes are 626 Satin Chrome, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome. Cylinder options are LC, LA Keyway, 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core); specify the outside cylinder as #46 (1-3/4"). The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers MicroShield® antimicrobial finish coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx® electro-mechanical functions, and vandalism-deterrent trim with secure fasteners as separately specified options. Lead time on this factory order is 3–4 weeks.
