Sargent 8204 FEE Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 FEE brings the full-escutcheon architectural statement of the 8200 Series to storeroom and closet openings that demand both refined detailing and long-term resilience. Specifying the FEE trim code pairs the FE Freewheeling Escutcheon—forged brass, sized to cover the full lock area—with the clean horizontal sweep of the E lever, creating a purposeful presence suited to institutional, commercial, and public-assembly environments. Under ANSI F07 (8204 Storeroom/Closet function), entry is by key from the outside only, while the inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely—controlled access in one direction, unimpeded egress in the other. Built on Sargent's multi-function 8200 Series lockbody, the 8204 FEE delivers Grade 1 operational and security performance behind a trim profile engineered specifically for areas where lever abuse is a real risk.

8204 Storeroom/Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Always-Free Egress

The 8204 ANSI F07 function is the specifier's standard choice for storerooms, supply closets, and any secured space where occupants must exit freely at all times but entry must remain key-controlled. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no interior locking button—the trim outside is locked at all times, and only a valid key retracts the latchbolt from the exterior.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder is the sole means of retracting the latchbolt from the exterior. The outside trim is locked at all times—no push-button, no thumbturn, no passage mode—making this function appropriate wherever continuous access control is required without staff intervention.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, with no mechanism to lock occupants in. This unconditional egress path is a critical life-safety characteristic for occupied storage and utility spaces.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: An auxiliary deadlatch works alongside the primary latchbolt to resist unlatching from outside the door. The deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, so it functions correctly regardless of which way the lock body is oriented in the door.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt & Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction tip that reduces closing force and door-edge wear. The lockbody itself is Sargent's multi-function design, meaning the same lock case supports nine different functions—so a function change in the future requires only new trim, not a new lock case.

FE Freewheeling Escutcheon with E Lever: Vandalism-Resistant Trim Built for High-Exposure Openings

The FE Freewheeling Escutcheon is Sargent's purpose-built trim for schools, universities, public buildings, back-of-house business entries, and any exterior or high-traffic door where lever abuse is a genuine risk. The forged brass outside escutcheon covers the lock area and provides added protection against vandalism, while the freewheeling mechanism means the lever returns to position automatically rather than staying bent or jammed after an abuse event.

  • 70-Degree Freewheeling Action with Self-Return: In the locked mode, the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees without transmitting torque to the lock mechanism. Because the lever automatically returns to its original position, no manual resetting is needed after a vandalism attempt—maintenance intervention is eliminated and the trim remains functional immediately.
  • Forged Brass Escutcheon and Stainless Steel Lever Bushing: The outside escutcheon is forged brass, providing added protection against vandalism and giving the trim its full architectural presence at the opening. The stainless steel lever bushing at the spindle protects against wear over years of heavy use. Note that because the outside escutcheon is this heavier forged brass construction, the outside cylinder must be the longer #46 (1-3/4")—specify the #46 when ordering a replacement or keyed cylinder for this trim; ordering a #41 for the outside will leave the cylinder short.
  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation, ADA Lever Form, and Through-Bolted Interchangeable Trim: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt, reducing the effort needed for users with limited grip strength. The E lever complies with the American Disability Act lever-handle requirement—consult local authorities to confirm applicability. Trim is through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon mountings to ensure proper alignment. Lever springs are contained inside the lock case, simplifying field installation.
  • Door Thickness and Handing: Standard fit is for 1-3/4" (44mm) doors; for 2" (51mm) or 2-1/4" (57mm) doors, door thickness must be specified at time of order. The FE escutcheon trim is handed—specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering. Available in five finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome. Note that 32 and 32D (bright chrome / bright stainless) finishes are not available on FE escutcheon trim.

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8200 Series lockbody is certified to and exceeds the top ANSI/BHMA grade for both operational performance and security with standard trims. Note: the LFIC (option 60) and SFIC (option 70) cylinder configurations offered on this listing do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements.
  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: Sargent completed a UL "above and beyond" cycle test at 16 million cycles—16 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement—with Verification ID V584148. For a storeroom or closet door cycled dozens of times daily, that margin translates directly into decades of reliable service.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Plated Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) /.109" wall thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel—paired with a high carbon steel spring cartridge—for superior strength and cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure Compliant: The lockset is UL and cUL Listed for A-label 4x10 single and 8x10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser-class doors, to both US and Canadian safety standards. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm listing in the field.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway (standard 6-pin brass cylinder, ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1, masterkey and grand masterkey capable, two nickel silver keys included); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1 requirements. LFIC and SFIC cores are not available on this trim in any other configuration.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is field reversible—re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case—reducing installation time and eliminating the need to stock separate-handed lock bodies.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 FEE requires an ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified door prep per template 7057 with a fixed 2-3/4" (70mm) backset—no other backset is offered, so verify door and frame dimensions before specifying. A minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile is required; narrower stile doors cannot accommodate this lockset. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but this trim is handed: specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR explicitly on every order. Standard fit is 1-3/4" (44mm) doors; 2" or 2-1/4" door thickness must be called out at time of order. Five finishes are available: 626, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core); LFIC and SFIC do not meet Security Grade 1. When ordering a keyed or replacement cylinder for this trim, specify the #46 (1-3/4") outside cylinder—the heavier forged brass FE escutcheon requires this longer size, and a #41 will be too short. Lead time is 3–4 weeks as a factory order. The broader 8200 Series offers optional configurations not included here, such as MicroShield antimicrobial finish coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical functions, and vandalism-deterrent trim with secure fasteners—consult your Sargent representative for separately specified options.
