Sargent 8204 FEA Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 FEA brings together the trusted engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform with the purpose-built FE Freewheeling Escutcheon and classic A lever — a combination specified wherever an exterior or high-traffic door demands disciplined storeroom or closet access control. The 8204 Storeroom/Closet function (ANSI F07) provides key-only entry from the outside while keeping the inside trim free for immediate egress at all times, with no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification. The forged brass outside escutcheon covers the mortise preparation in the door face, and the freewheeling lever mechanism is engineered specifically for schools, universities, public buildings, and any exterior door where abusive force is a real operational concern.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Only Entry, Always-Free Egress

The 8204 defines a clear authority boundary: the outside is always locked and admits only a valid key, while the inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely without a key or credential. There is no deadbolt and no thumbturn — security is provided by the latchbolt, the auxiliary deadlatch, and consistent single-cylinder key control on the outside.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a correct key retracts the latchbolt. This makes the 8204 appropriate wherever uncontrolled public access to the outside lever must be prevented — the hardware enforces that boundary without any additional configuration.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, with no key, credential, or mode change required. Occupants can exit at any time, which is critical for life-safety compliance on occupied storerooms and closets.
  • Auxiliary Deadlatch: The stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch is non-handed and deadlocks the latchbolt automatically when the door closes against the strike. This prevents the latchbolt from being pushed back with a tool when the door is shut, adding a meaningful layer of day-to-day security without any additional hardware.
  • Anti-Friction Latchbolt and Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt delivers a 3/4" (19mm) throw with an anti-friction tip that eases latching under door pressure. The A Multi-Function 8200/7800 Lockbody means a single lock case can be reconfigured to nine different functions — protecting the hardware investment if access requirements change over the life of the installation.

FE Freewheeling Escutcheon with A Lever — Forged Brass Plate, Vandalism-Resistant Action

The FE trim positions a forged brass outside escutcheon over the mortise preparation in the door face, providing added protection against vandalism where the lock case meets the door stile. The A lever is the largest-projection lever available in the FE family at 3-9/16" (90mm), making it highly usable under the ADA lever-operation standard — while the freewheeling mechanism protects the trim itself from the forces most likely to damage a conventional lever.

  • Freewheeling Outside Lever — 70-Degree Swing: When the door is locked, the outside lever swings freely down to 70 degrees without transmitting torque to the lock mechanism, then self-returns to its original position. Because the lever never stiffens or binds under an abusive load, there is no damaged cam to reset and no service call — the trim simply returns to ready position.
  • 30-Degree Operation and Lever Springs Inside the Case: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt on the inside, and the lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim. That internal placement simplifies trim removal and reinstallation — an advantage on doors that see frequent hardware inspection or finish changes.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, levers, and escutcheons are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment and consistent pull-through strength at the fastener. The stainless steel lever bushing at the escutcheon protects the bearing surface against wear over high-cycle institutional use.
  • ADA Lever Operation — Consult Local Authorities: The A lever complies with the American Disability Act lever-operation requirements; consult local authorities to confirm application-specific compliance. The trim is offered in five architectural finishes — 626 Satin Chrome, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome — and is handed; specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering.

Function (Sargent Catalog)

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed a UL above-and-beyond cycle test at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148), exceeding the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement by 16 times — a meaningful margin for storeroom doors in high-traffic institutional facilities.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 FEA with standard cylinder is certified to both the operational and security grade under the A156.13 Series 1000 benchmark. Note: the LFIC (option 60) and SFIC (option 70) cores available on this listing do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements.
  • 12-Gauge Heavy-Duty Wrought Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — paired with a high carbon steel spring cartridge for long-term lever strength.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: The lockset carries UL and cUL listings for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser class doors, confirmed by the stamped F and UL symbol on the armored front. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements — necessary for many code-compliant stairwell and corridor storeroom applications.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four cylinder configurations: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders, LA Keyway with standard two nickel-silver keys, 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core). The LA keyway can be masterkeyed, grand masterkeyed, or construction-keyed. Sargent security key systems including Degree, Signature, Keso, Keso F1, and XC are available.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (replacement of lockbody). The lock body re-hands in the field without removing parts or opening the lock case — a practical installation advantage on projects where door handing is confirmed late.

Ordering & Installation Information

The 8204 FEA installs to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 door prep with a fixed 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available, so confirm the door prep before ordering. A 4-1/2" (114mm) minimum stile is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the mortise case. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44mm); for 2" (51mm) or 2-1/4" (57mm) doors, specify the door thickness explicitly on your order. The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering. Because the outside escutcheon is heavier forged brass, this trim takes the longer #46 (1-3/4") outside cylinder; ordering a #41 for the outside of this trim will leave the cylinder short — always specify the #46 when supplying your own cylinder under the LC option. Available finishes: 626, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Factory lead time is 3–4 weeks. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers MicroShield® antimicrobial finish coating, ElectroLynx® electro-mechanical configurations, status indicators, push/pull ALP trim, and vandalism-deterrent secure fasteners as separately specified options.
