Sargent 8204 EA Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 EA brings together the trusted engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise platform with a trim profile sized for doors where restraint matters as much as performance. The E Rose measures 3-1/16" square, covering more door face than the round LN, TR, CR and O roses while the A lever delivers a clean, institutional grip that holds up under constant use. Configured to the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07), this lockset admits keyholders from outside while keeping the inside lever always free for immediate egress — the precise access logic required for storerooms, supply closets, and secured utility spaces in commercial and institutional facilities. This is a fully mechanical, single-cylinder function: no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no electrification.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Always-Free Egress
The ANSI F07 function keeps the outside trim locked at all times so entry requires a key on every approach — there is no passage mode and no holdback. The inside lever is never locked, ensuring occupants can always exit without a key. Two precision stainless steel latching components work together to make every door closure positive and secure.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times; only a key retracts the latchbolt from the corridor side. Because there is no inside thumbturn and no request-to-exit button, access is always credential-controlled — the right choice wherever unattended entry must be prevented.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever retracts the latchbolt unconditionally, with no unlocking step required. Occupants can exit immediately under any condition, satisfying life-safety egress requirements for storerooms and utility spaces without a separate exit device.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed. When the door closes, it deadlocks the latchbolt against push-in attack — an independent mechanical safeguard that operates automatically on every closure without any action by the user.
- Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt: The one-piece latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19 mm) throw and an anti-friction feature that reduces the force needed to pull a door shut. The same lockbody is a multi-function platform accommodating nine functions, so facility managers can standardise on a single case across multiple door types.
E Rose (3-1/16" Square) and A Lever — A Squared Footprint for Busy Institutional Doors
At 3-1/16" square, the E Rose is the largest of the standard roses after the 3-1/2" L Rose, and the only one presented as a squared plate rather than a round disc. Paired with the A lever — a clean, straight institutional profile — the combination reads as purposeful rather than decorative, which suits the storeroom and closet environments this function serves.
- Compact E Rose Carrier: The 3-1/16" square E Rose covers a broader area of the door face than any of the round roses except the L, which is useful where an earlier preparation or a wear ring needs concealing. Its modest diameter does not compromise the through-bolted connection: trim, levers, and roses are fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations to ensure proper alignment.
- Low-Effort Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt fully. On a high-traffic storeroom door that may be opened dozens of times per shift, that reduced arc translates directly to less operator fatigue and faster throughput.
- Lever Springs Inside the Case: The lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than mounted on the trim. This protects them from damage during installation and keeps the trim assembly itself cleaner and easier to handle — a practical advantage when fitting levers in tight stairwell or service-corridor conditions.
- ADA Lever Profile and Finish Range: The A lever complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act — consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your jurisdiction. Six architectural finishes are offered on this listing: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: The 8204 EA is certified to and exceeds both operational and security Grade 1 with standard trims. Note: the LFIC and SFIC cylinder options offered on this listing do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify the LA keyway or LC less-cylinder option where Security Grade 1 must be maintained throughout.
- 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles (Verification ID: V584148) — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 minimum. On a storeroom door in a busy facility, that reserve of tested life means fewer unplanned replacements.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, with a wall thickness of 7/64" (3 mm). The internal hubs are cold forged steel — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge for the strength and cycle life the 8200 Series is rated to.
- UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing and UL 10C Positive Pressure: The lockset is UL and cUL Listed for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour) fire doors and lesser classifications. It also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure fire test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm the listing in the field.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: Four options are available on this listing: LC – Less Cylinder (for owner-supplied cylinders); LA Keyway (standard brass cylinder, masterkey- and grand-masterkey-capable, construction keying available); 60 – LFIC Less Core; and 70 – SFIC Less Core. LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. The standard cylinder for this trim is a #41 (1-1/8") brass cylinder.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lock body with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty, limited to replacement of the lock body. The 8204 is a fully mechanical function — it has no electrification — so no electrical warranty terms apply to this configuration.

Ordering & Installation Information
The 8204 EA installs to ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057 door prep on doors 1-3/4" (44 mm) thick standard, with a fixed 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset — confirm rough opening dimensions before ordering since no other backset is offered. A 4-1/2" (114 mm) minimum stile is required; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the case. The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed without opening the case, but the A lever trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR at time of order or the trim cannot be installed correctly. Six finishes are available: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, and 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), and 70 (SFIC less core). This is a factory order item with a lead time of 3–4 weeks. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield antimicrobial coating, electro-mechanical configurations, status indicators, and security trim variants — consult DoorwaysPlus for separately specified configurations.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
