Sargent 8204 CRY Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

Precise in form and uncompromising in duty, the Sargent 8200 Series 8204 CRY Mortise Lockset brings the storeroom/closet function (ANSI F07) to doors where controlled single-point entry is non-negotiable. Trim code CRY pairs the CR Contemporary Rose — a beveled-edge, 2-3/16" diameter disc with a clean architectural profile — with the Y lever, a combination that rewards the hand with only 30 degrees of rotation needed to retract the latch. The 8204 keeps the outside lever locked at all times, admits entry by key only, and lets occupants exit freely from inside at any moment — no deadbolt, no thumbturn, no status indicator. For storerooms, closets and secure support spaces in commercial and institutional buildings, this is the refined, uncomplicated answer.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Always-Free Egress

The 8204 is purpose-built for spaces where access must be restricted but exit must never be. The outside trim is locked at all times and yields only to a key; the inside trim operates the latch freely, with no credential required. Two stainless steel latching components work together to keep the door positively secured whenever it is closed.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside lever is locked at all times — only a key retracts the latchbolt from the corridor side. There is no thumbturn and no push-button hold-open; the door returns to a secured condition every time it closes.
  • Unrestricted Inside Egress: The inside lever always retracts the latchbolt, with no key or credential required. This unconditional free egress is the defining characteristic of the storeroom function and the reason ANSI F07 is the correct choice for occupied storage and closet spaces.
  • Auxiliary Deadlatch — Stainless Steel, Non-Handed: A stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch works alongside the main latchbolt to resist unintended or forced retraction of the latch when the door is closed. Because it is non-handed, it performs identically on left-hand and right-hand applications without any adjustment.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt: The one-piece stainless steel latchbolt provides a 3/4" (19 mm) throw with an anti-friction feature that reduces the effort needed to close the door against the strike — a practical benefit on high-traffic storeroom doors. The same lock body supports nine ANSI functions, meaning the 8200 Multi-Function lockbody can be re-specified across a project without changing the door preparation.

CRY Trim: CR Contemporary Rose (2-3/16" dia., Beveled Edge) with Y Lever

The CR Contemporary Rose presents a disciplined, low-profile silhouette — a 2-3/16" diameter disc with a beveled edge that transitions smoothly to the door face. Paired with the Y lever, the combination reads as quietly modern and fits cleanly within both minimalist commercial interiors and traditionally detailed institutional settings.

  • 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt —. For users making repeated trips through a storeroom door, that reduced arc translates to less wrist effort on every cycle.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: To ensure proper alignment, the rose and lever are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations. This means trim components can be replaced or upgraded in the field without disturbing the lock body.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: The Y lever's return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim itself, which simplifies installation and keeps the rose face uncluttered. Complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities for jurisdiction-specific requirements.
  • Six Architectural Finishes: The CRY trim is offered in 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome — a range that covers both contemporary and traditional finish schedules. Specify the finish code when ordering.

Key Product Features

  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000, Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified to and exceeds the highest ANSI/BHMA performance grade for mortise locksets with standard trims. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements — specify accordingly when Security Grade 1 is required by the project.
  • 16 Million Cycle Verified Durability: The 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — 16 times the cycles required by the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 standard (Verification ID: V584148). On a high-traffic storeroom door, that margin is a direct measure of long-term reliability.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3 mm) thickness. The 8200 Series hubs are cold forged steel — paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge — providing the structural foundation for that extended cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Listed and UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser-class doors; also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test of Door Assemblies. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm the listing at installation inspection.
  • Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered in four configurations: LC (Less Cylinder, for owner-supplied cylinders); LA Keyway (standard Sargent LA keyway, brass #41 (1-1/8") cylinder, masterkeying and construction keying available); 60 (LFIC Less Core); and 70 (SFIC Less Core). LFIC and SFIC core options do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. Two nickel silver keys ship with keyed cylinders.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series lock body with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lock body). The lock body is field-reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time and minimizing the risk of ordering the wrong handing for the body.

Ordering & Installation Information

Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The lock requires a 2-3/4" (70 mm) backset — no other backset is available — and a 4-1/2" (114 mm) minimum stile width; verify both before specifying on narrow-stile doors. Standard door thickness is 1-3/4" (44 mm), and the series is offered for thicknesses from 1-3/8" to 6" for project-specific requirements.

The lock body is field reversible without opening the case; however, the Y lever trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when ordering. Select one of six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options on this listing are LC, LA Keyway, 60 (LFIC Less Core), and 70 (SFIC Less Core); note that LFIC and SFIC do not meet Security Grade 1. This is a factory order item with a 3–4 week lead time. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers optional MicroShield® antimicrobial finish coating, electro-mechanical configurations with ElectroLynx® connectors, status indicators, and vandalism-deterrent secure-fastener trims — consult DoorwaysPlus for series-level options.
