Sargent 8204 CRG Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset
The Sargent 8204 CRG brings together the precision engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset with a trim package that keeps the door face clean and uncluttered. The CR Contemporary Rose — a beveled-edge disc measuring just 2-3/16" in diameter — pairs with the G lever to deliver a refined, low-profile presence suited to corridors, storage rooms, and service spaces where a minimal aesthetic matters as much as performance. The 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07) controls access through key-only entry from outside while ensuring free egress from inside at all times — the correct mechanical solution wherever interior occupants must never be locked in. Specified across institutional, commercial, and facilities environments, this single-cylinder mortise lockset meets ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1.
8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Entry, Unrestricted Egress
The 8204 defines the mechanical logic of a storeroom door: the outside trim is locked at all times, admitting only those with a key, while the inside lever always retracts the latchbolt freely. There is no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no occupancy indicator — the function is purposefully simple, reliable, and tamper-resistant from the corridor side.
- Key-Only Outside Entry: Turning a key in the outside cylinder retracts the latchbolt — and only a key will do it, because the outside trim is locked at all times. This prevents unauthorized entry without any additional step by the occupant.
- Always-Free Inside Egress: The inside lever retracts the latchbolt at all times without a key or any unlocking action. Because egress is never impeded regardless of the outside locked status, the 8204 is appropriate for occupied storerooms and closets where personnel must be able to exit freely.
- Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, automatically deadlocking the latchbolt when the door closes against the strike. This prevents the latchbolt from being pushed back by an improvised tool, a practical security feature that requires no action from the user.
- Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt: The one-piece latchbolt is stainless steel with a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction design, allowing the door to close smoothly against the strike without resistance — reducing wear on both the latch and strike over millions of operating cycles. The lockbody is a multi-function 8200/7800 unit, meaning a single lock case can be converted to other ANSI functions if the application changes.
CR Contemporary Rose (2-3/16" dia, Beveled Edge) with G Lever — Compact Footprint, Refined Detail
The CR Contemporary Rose is one of the smallest rose-style carriers in the 8200 Series lineup: at 2-3/16" in diameter with a beveled edge, it exposes minimal door face and allows the G lever to read as the dominant visual element. That restraint is characteristic of contemporary institutional design language — hardware that recedes rather than competes with the architecture.
- Compact Rose Carrier: The CR Contemporary Rose at 2-3/16" diameter with a beveled edge covers a tighter footprint on the door face than larger escutcheon formats. Where door surfaces are premium or wall tile runs to the door frame, the smaller profile reduces visual interruption.
- 30-Degree Lever Operation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to retract the latchbolt, making the inside lever fast and easy to operate — a practical benefit in high-traffic service doors and a contributor to the lock's long cycle life.
- Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: The rose and lever assembly is through-bolted to the lock case, ensuring proper alignment and a secure connection. Trim is fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations within the 8200 Series, and lever springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, simplifying trim removal and reinstallation in the field.
- ADA Lever Design and Finish Options: The G lever complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities for jurisdiction-specific requirements. The trim is offered in six finishes: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome, covering the range from warm traditional to cool contemporary palettes.

Key Product Features
- ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Grade 1: Certified to Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1 with standard trims — the highest ANSI grade for mortise locksets, confirming performance across strength, cycle, and security criteria. Note: LFIC and SFIC cylinder options do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements.
- 16 Million Cycle Durability (Verification ID: V584148): The 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — sixteen times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 cycle requirement. For a storeroom door used repeatedly throughout the day, this translates to a service life measured in decades rather than years.
- 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 hubs are cold forged steel, paired with a high-carbon steel spring cartridge — internal components chosen for strength and cycle endurance.
- UL/cUL Listed — 3-Hour Fire Door and UL 10C Positive Pressure: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser-class doors. Also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements. The armored front is stamped with the letter F and UL symbol to confirm the listing on the installed hardware.
- Cylinder and Keyway Options: This listing is offered with: LC (Less Cylinder) for owner-supplied cylinders; LA Keyway standard conventional cylinder (#41, 1-1/8" brass, ANSI/BHMA A156.5 Grade 1, 6-pin, masterkey and grand masterkey capable, construction keying available); 60 — LFIC Less Core; and 70 — SFIC Less Core. LFIC and SFIC core options are available but do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. No other core format is available on this listing.
- 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty and Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 lockbody with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case — reducing installation time and eliminating handing errors at the job site.

Ordering & Installation Information
Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057. The lock requires a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available — and a minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile width; confirm both before ordering to avoid field conflicts. The lock is designed for 1-3/4" (44mm) thick doors as standard.
The lock body is field reversible without opening the case, but the G lever trim is handed and must be specified at time of order: choose LH, RH, LHR, or RHR. Six finishes are available: 626 Satin Chrome, 630 Satin Stainless, 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal, 605 Polished Brass, 612 Satin Bronze, and 625 Polished Chrome. Cylinder options on this listing: LC, LA Keyway, 60 LFIC Less Core, and 70 SFIC Less Core; LFIC and SFIC do not meet Security Grade 1. Two nickel silver keys are included with keyed cylinders; control or emergency keys must be ordered separately when required.
This item is a factory order with a lead time of 3–4 weeks. The broader 8200 Series offers optional configurations including electro-mechanical functions, MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, and push/pull ALP trim — consult DoorwaysPlus for separately specified options.
Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture above to your opening for clarification.
