Sargent 8204 CER Trim Storeroom or Closet Function Mortise Lockset

Sargent 8204 Storeroom or Closet function diagram - Sargent 7800/8200 Series catalog

The Sargent 8204 CER brings together the commercial-grade engineering of the Sargent 8200 Series mortise lockset with the clean, architectural character of the CE Contemporary Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", beveled edge, Coastal Series) and R lever trim. Configured for the 8204 Storeroom or Closet function (ANSI F07), this lock keeps the outside trim locked at all times — entry is by key only — while the inside trim always allows free egress, making it the correct mechanical solution for storerooms, supply closets, and secured utility corridors that demand controlled access without sacrificing occupant safety. The 8204 has no deadbolt, no thumbturn, and no electrification; its security comes from a continuously locked outside trim and an auxiliary stainless steel deadlatch. Certified to ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1, the 8200 Series is built to hold up in the highest-traffic institutional and commercial environments.

8204 Storeroom / Closet Function — ANSI F07: Key-Controlled Outside Entry, Always-Free Inside Egress

The ANSI F07 function is purpose-engineered for spaces that must stay locked from the corridor side around the clock. Outside trim is locked at all times — a key is required to retract the latchbolt from the outside. Inside trim always retracts the latchbolt freely, so occupants can exit without a key at any time. The stainless steel auxiliary deadlatch guards against latch manipulation whenever the door is closed.

  • Key-Only Outside Entry: The outside trim is locked at all times — only a key retracts the latchbolt from the corridor side. There is no thumbturn, no push-button, and no inside unlocking mechanism, so the door cannot be left unsecured by an occupant.
  • Always-Free Inside Egress: Inside trim always retracts the latchbolt, providing unobstructed exit without a key. This constant-free egress characteristic makes the 8204 correct for occupied storerooms and utility closets where trapping an occupant inside is unacceptable.
  • Stainless Steel Auxiliary Deadlatch: The auxiliary deadlatch is stainless steel and non-handed, meaning it functions correctly regardless of which way the lock body is installed. When the door closes, the deadlatch automatically guards the primary latchbolt against being pushed back without a key.
  • Anti-Friction Stainless Steel Latchbolt & Multi-Function Lockbody: The one-piece, stainless steel latchbolt has a 3/4" (19mm) throw and an anti-friction design that reduces door-closing resistance — important in high-traffic corridors where doors cycle constantly. The lockbody is Sargent's Multi-Function 8200 platform, giving facilities the option to respecify to a different ANSI function in the future without replacing the entire mortise pocket prep.

CE Contemporary Escutcheon (2" x 7-7/8", beveled edge, Coastal Series) with R Lever — Architectural Styling Built for High-Traffic Corridors

The CER trim pairs the CE Contemporary Escutcheon from Sargent's Coastal Series with the R lever, delivering a refined, modern profile suited to commercial and institutional interiors where appearance retention matters as much as durability. The Coastal Series escutcheon's contemporary geometry keeps corridors visually cohesive across multiple door openings, and the available finishes are selected to hold their character under repeated daily contact.

  • 30-Degree Lever Rotation: Only 30 degrees of lever rotation is required to fully retract the latchbolt. This low operating arc reduces the effort needed per cycle — a practical benefit on doors that staff, residents, or maintenance personnel use dozens of times a day.
  • Through-Bolted, Interchangeable Trim: Trim, knobs, and levers are through-bolted and fully interchangeable between rose and escutcheon configurations, ensuring proper alignment is maintained over the life of the installation and simplifying specification across mixed trim styles on a single project.
  • Lever Springs Inside the Case: Lever return springs are contained inside the lock case rather than in the trim, which means trim can be removed or swapped during a renovation without disturbing the spring mechanism — and installation on the door is cleaner and faster.
  • ADA Lever Operation & Finish Selection: The R lever design complies with the American Disability Act — consult local authorities to confirm applicability to your jurisdiction. Five architectural finishes are offered: 626 Satin Chrome (US26D), 613E Oil Rubbed Bronze Equal (US10BE), 605 Polished Brass (US3), 612 Satin Bronze (US10), and 625 Polished Chrome (US26).

Key Product Features

  • 16 Million Cycle Durability: The Sargent 8200 Series completed UL cycle testing at 16 million cycles — 16 times the ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Grade 1 requirement (Verification ID: V584148). In a high-traffic storeroom corridor, that endurance margin directly translates to a longer service life before mechanical wear becomes a maintenance concern.
  • ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 — Operational Grade 1 and Security Grade 1: Certified to the highest commercial mortise lock standard with standard trims. Note that if LFIC (option 60) or SFIC (option 70) cores are specified, those cylinder configurations do not meet Security Grade 1 requirements per ANSI/BHMA A156.13.
  • 12-Gauge Zinc-Dichromate Steel Case with Cold Forged Steel Hubs: The lock case is 12-gauge heavy-duty wrought steel, zinc dichromate plated, at 7/64" (3mm) thickness. The 8200 Series lever hubs are cold forged steel — not the sintered iron used in the 7800 line — backed by heavy-duty wrought steel hubs and a high carbon steel spring cartridge for superior strength and cycle life.
  • UL/cUL 3-Hour Fire Door Listing & Positive Pressure Compliance: Listed to US and Canadian safety standards for A-label 4×10 single and 8×10 double (3-hour fire door) and lesser-class doors; the armored front is stamped with the letter F and the UL symbol to confirm listing. The lockset also meets ANSI/UL 10C Positive Pressure Fire Test requirements.
  • Cylinder & Keyway Options: This listing is offered with the following cylinder configurations: LC – Less Cylinder (owner supplies cylinder); LA Keyway (standard 6-pin brass cylinder, #41 size, 1-1/8"); 60 – LFIC Less Core; and 70 – SFIC Less Core. The LA cylinder can be masterkeyed or grand masterkeyed; construction keying is available. LFIC and SFIC cores are not included and must be ordered separately — and note they do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1.
  • 10-Year Limited Mechanical Warranty & Field-Reversible Lock Body: Sargent backs the 8200 Series with a 10-year limited mechanical warranty (warranty limited to replacement of the lockbody). The lock body is field reversible — it can be re-handed without removing parts or opening the lock case, reducing labor cost when a door swing changes after initial installation.

Ordering & Installation Information

The Sargent 8204 CER is a factory order with a lead time of 3–4 weeks. Door preparation follows ANSI/SDI A250.14 modified per template 7057; verify the door blank matches this template before ordering. The lock requires a 2-3/4" (70mm) backset — no other backset is available — and a minimum 4-1/2" (114mm) stile; narrower stiles cannot accommodate the mortise case. Standard installation is for 1-3/4" (44mm) thick doors.

The lock body is field reversible and can be re-handed without opening the case. However, this trim is handed — specify LH, RH, LHR, or RHR when placing your order, as the trim cannot be reversed in the field. Specify one of six finishes: 626, 630, 613E, 605, 612, or 625. Cylinder options are LC, LA, 60 (LFIC less core), or 70 (SFIC less core); LFIC and SFIC cores do not meet ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Security Grade 1. Two nickel silver keys ship standard with keyed cylinders; masterkeying and construction keying are available. The broader Sargent 8200 Series also offers MicroShield antimicrobial coating, status indicators, ElectroLynx electro-mechanical functions, and push/pull ALP trim as separately specified options.
