Norton 8501 Surface Door Closer — Full Cover, Tri-Pack Sizes 1–6 (689 / 690 / BSP)

The Norton 8501 is an architectural-grade, surface-mounted door closer from Norton's 8000 Series — a cast-aluminum, rack-and-pinion unit engineered for commercial and institutional applications where reliable, consistent door control is essential. This listing covers the full-cover (not slim-cover) 8501 model in a Tri-Style package that includes regular arm, top-jamb arm, and parallel arm brackets in a single box, eliminating separate hardware orders for different installation conditions. Available finishes are 689 (aluminum), 690 (dark bronze), and BSP (black suede powder coat).

Key Features & Benefits

  • Cast-Aluminum Rack-and-Pinion Mechanism: Precision-machined 1-1/4 in (32 mm) piston and 5/8 in pinion journals deliver smooth, repeatable closing action across the full range of spring sizes.
  • Spring Sizes 1–6 (PT 4H): Field-adjustable closing force meets a wide range of door weights up to 250 lb, sized per ANSI/BHMA A156.4 option PT 4H — accommodating light interior doors through heavy commercial doors in a single unit.
  • Three Independent Hydraulic Valves: Separate latch speed, sweep speed, and backcheck valves allow precise independent tuning. Backcheck engages at approximately 75 degrees of swing to protect door frames and adjacent walls from impact damage.
  • NorGlide Hydraulic Fluid — Rated to −40 °F: Purpose-formulated fluid maintains consistent viscosity in extreme cold, making the 8501 suitable for vestibules, cold-storage corridors, and northern climate applications without seasonal drift.
  • UL-Listed High-Impact Full Cover: The molded full cover (not the slim 8301 profile) provides a clean architectural appearance, conceals the arm mechanism, and is UL listed for fire-rated door assemblies.
  • ADA / A117.1 Interior Door Compliance: With proper spring-size adjustment, the 8501 can be set to meet interior door opening-force requirements per ADA and ANSI A117.1 — important for accessible-route doors in commercial buildings (refer to 2026 catalog guidelines).
  • 180-Degree Door Swing: Standard arm applications support up to 180-degree swing where wall clearance and door geometry allow, maximizing egress width.
  • Tri-Style Packaging: Regular, top-jamb, and parallel arm hardware included — one SKU covers the three most common commercial installation orientations.
  • Non-Hold-Open Configuration: Designed for doors that must return to a closed and latched position; compatible with fire-rated openings that prohibit hold-open functions.
  • Interior Installation Required for Warranty: Norton specifies installation on the interior (protected) side of the building to maintain warranty coverage.
  • 30-Year Limited Warranty / Lifetime Housing Warranty: 30-year limited warranty on the mechanism; life-of-the-building coverage on the aluminum housing — a long-term value for facility managers and building owners.

Typical Applications

  • Commercial office buildings and tenant suite entry doors
  • Institutional corridors — schools, hospitals, and government facilities
  • Fire-rated openings requiring a surface closer with UL-listed cover
  • ADA accessible-route interior doors requiring controlled closing force
  • Cold-climate vestibules and exterior-adjacent corridors

Closer Adjustments

Use the hex wrench supplied with the closer. Never force valves out of the closer. Never completely close the backcheck valve. The door must be open to adjust spring power. Do not use a power drill -- that voids the warranty. Do not remove the valves; removal causes a fluid leak.

Closer valve adjustments: latch, sweep, delayed action, backcheck position, backcheck, and spring power
