How to Identify Your Lock Cylinder
Choosing the right replacement cylinder requires checking three main factors:
- Cylinder Type: Mortise cylinders are threaded and screw directly into the lock body. Rim cylinders use long mounting bolts and a flat tailpiece.
- Length & Cam: For mortise cylinders, the length (e.g., 1-1/8") is vital to ensure it sits flush with the door or rose. Additionally, ensure the Cam on the back of the cylinder matches your lock brand (e.g., Adams Rite, Sargent, Yale, Corbin Russwin, or Schlage Cam).
- Core Type: Determine if you have a Fixed Core (requires disassembly to re-key) or an Interchangeable Core (IC), which can be removed instantly with a control key.
