Top-hung and bottom-supported systems each have a clear set of advantages, limitations, and applications where they belong. This guide helps contractors, facility managers, and architects make that call before hardware gets ordered and the door gets hung.

What Is Top-Hung Sliding Door Hardware?

A top-hung sliding door system supports the full weight of the door from an overhead track. Roller carriers or trolleys attach to the top of the door and ride inside a structural track mounted to the header or ceiling structure above the opening. A floor guide at the bottom keeps the door from swinging outward but carries no load.

What Is Bottom-Supported (Bottom-Rolling) Sliding Door Hardware?

A bottom-rolling system reverses the load path. The door rides on a track set into or mounted on the floor, with rollers or wheels at the door base carrying the weight. An overhead guide or channel at the top keeps the door plumb and prevents racking, but the header structure carries no significant load.

Bottom-rolling systems are common on very heavy doors -- large industrial panels, exterior barn-style applications, and oversized commercial openings -- where building the header structure to carry the door weight would be prohibitively expensive or structurally impractical.

How to Choose: Five Deciding Factors

1. Door Weight

This is the primary structural question. Top-hung systems require that the header or framing above the opening can carry the door's dead load continuously. For lighter interior doors -- wood panels up to 55 kg (121 lbs) in standard configurations, glass panels to 130 kg (287 lbs) or more in commercial-grade top-hung hardware -- the header load is manageable in most commercial construction. As door weight increases toward 200 kg and beyond, confirming header capacity with the structural engineer becomes mandatory.

Bottom-rolling systems shift that load to the floor slab, which in most commercial and industrial construction is the stronger substrate. Extremely heavy industrial doors, wide barn-style exterior panels, and large wood or steel commercial doors are natural candidates.

2. Floor Conditions

Bottom-rolling hardware lives at floor level, which means it is exposed to foot traffic, water, debris, cleaning chemicals, and physical impact. In healthcare corridors, food processing facilities, or any space that is wet-mopped or hosed down, a floor-level track collects contamination and is harder to clean. It also creates a tripping hazard and an obstacle for carts, wheelchairs, and pallet jacks.

Top-hung systems eliminate floor-level obstructions almost entirely. The floor guide is a small, low-profile component -- often flush or near-flush -- that creates no meaningful barrier at grade. This makes top-hung the preferred choice anywhere ADA accessibility, cart traffic, or sanitation drives the decision.

3. Structural Header Availability

Top-hung track must anchor to something solid. A wood stud header, a steel angle, a concrete lintel, or a structural beam all work -- provided the fastener schedule and the substrate can carry the load. In retrofit situations, installers sometimes discover that the existing framing above the opening is not adequate for a top-hung system, which forces a bottom-rolling solution or a structural upgrade.

Always verify header construction before specifying top-hung hardware, especially in older buildings or light-gauge metal stud partitions where the track anchor point may need supplemental backing.

4. Application Environment

  • K-12 schools and universities: Top-hung systems keep corridors clear and are easier for custodial staff to maintain. High-traffic folding partition systems in gymnasiums and cafeterias use heavy-duty top-hung track.
  • Healthcare: Top-hung is strongly preferred in patient room, ICU, and procedure room openings. Floor-level track conflicts with infection control protocols and creates tripping hazards for staff moving equipment quickly.
  • Retail and office: Top-hung barn-style and bypass systems are popular for fitting rooms, conference room dividers, and storefront interior partitions where aesthetics and clear floor lanes matter.
  • Industrial and warehouse: Bottom-rolling or bottom-supported systems handle very wide, very heavy steel or wood panels where top-hung header loads would be impractical. Cold-storage rooms and large equipment bays are typical examples.
  • Exterior applications: Both systems appear outdoors, but bottom-rolling track in an exterior setting must manage drainage and debris. Top-hung exterior systems need weather-resistant track and carriers rated for outdoor exposure.

5. Maintenance Access

Top-hung systems are generally easier to adjust and service. Roller height adjustments, carrier replacement, and track cleaning are all accessible at standing height or with a short ladder. Floor-level track on a bottom-rolling system requires bending, crouching, and clearing the track channel -- a harder job in occupied spaces.

Top-Hung System Components

  • Overhead track (steel, extruded aluminum, or stainless -- sized to door weight and span)
  • Roller carriers or trolleys (ball-bearing for heavy or high-cycle doors)
  • End stops or bumpers on the track
  • Floor guide or bottom guide channel (surface-mounted or recessed)
  • Fascia or cover plate if the track will be visible and aesthetics matter
  • Soft-close or deceleration mechanism where slamming is a concern

Bottom-Supported System Components

  • Floor track (structural steel or heavy-gauge aluminum, secured to slab)
  • Bottom rollers or wheel assemblies rated to door weight
  • Top guide channel or anti-jump bracket at the header
  • Track end stops
  • Threshold transition or floor-level seal if weathertight performance is required

A Note on Fire-Rated Sliding Doors

Fire-rated sliding door assemblies carry their own hardware requirements under NFPA 80. The door, frame, hardware, and closing mechanism must be part of a listed assembly. Self-closing or automatic-closing function is required, and hardware substitutions outside the listing are not permitted. If your sliding door opening has a fire-rating requirement, verify that the complete hardware system -- track, carriers, and closing device -- is part of a listed and labeled assembly before specifying components individually.
