What Is a Meeting Stile Seal -- and Why Does It Matter?

Bulb and Blade Gaskets

Extruded EPDM or neoprene bulb profiles compress between the two stile faces and provide a more positive seal against air infiltration and light moisture. They are common on thermally broken aluminum systems and on school or healthcare exterior vestibule pairs where energy code performance matters.

Blade-style gaskets are thinner and suited to tighter meeting stile gaps. Bulb profiles need adequate clearance to compress correctly -- if the gap between closed stiles is too small, the gasket rolls rather than compresses and creates an uneven line contact that fails prematurely.

Surface-Applied Astragals with Integrated Seals

On exterior aluminum pairs and on openings where a single-point latch is insufficient for weather control, a surface-applied astragal -- a vertical bar mounted to the face of the active or inactive leaf -- covers the meeting stile gap and carries an integrated seal on its edge. The critical installation point with astragals on aluminum pairs is sequence: do not try to achieve a perfect seal at installation. Hardware Compatibility at the Meeting Stile
