Fire-Rated Wood Doors Under NFPA 80 and 081400
Section 081400 can include fire-rated assemblies up to 90 minutes for stile-and-rail construction and up to 3 hours for some mineral-core flush doors. What the section does not control -- but must coordinate with -- is the field prep limitation under NFPA 80:
- Field holes for surface-applied hardware are limited to a maximum of 1 inch diameter without label service authorization.
- Cylinder holes are permitted in any size.
- Maximum undercut for wood fire doors is 3/4 inch.
- All other preparations must be performed at the factory under label service or by an approved label service agency.
This means hardware preps that were not anticipated in the original 081400 order -- an added door position switch, a last-minute electric hinge, a coordinator prep -- require label service work, not a field drill. Coordinate the full hardware set before the door ships.
Hardware Coordination Checklist Before the 081400 Order Is Released
- Confirm core type supports mortise hardware and closer loads at every opening.
- Verify top rail height against the closer model specified in the hardware set.
