  • Latch hardware: Historic interiors often have finish requirements that extend to the latch or pull. Specify a flush ring pull or a concealed cam latch so no hardware projects past the wall plane. Some panels offer a screwdriver-slot cam for completely tool-accessed openings where a visible latch knob is unacceptable.
  • Ceiling vs. wall application: Plaster bead panels are available in both orientations. Ceiling-mount units typically include a spring-assisted hinge to prevent the door from dropping uncontrolled when opened.

Fire Rating Considerations in Plaster Wall Assemblies

Older buildings frequently have plaster-on-metal-lath assemblies that carry a fire-resistance rating derived from their original construction -- a rating that can be compromised when an unrated panel is cut into the wall. Work with the architect of record and the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) to confirm whether the proposed panel location falls within a rated assembly. If it does, specify a fire-rated access door with the appropriate hourly rating and confirm it is listed for installation in a plaster assembly, not only in gypsum board.
