Heavy-Duty Concealed Holders

Installation Reality: What Gets Cut Wrong
Concealed holders require precise mortising in two planes: the door top and the frame head. Dimension errors that seem minor on the bench create binding, misalignment, or a holder that will not engage. Key field notes:
- The A and F dimensions are measured on the centerline of the door, not from the door edge. Getting this wrong is the most common layout error.
- The B dimension for the jamb bracket is measured from the hinge centerline, not from the edge of the frame. Butt-hung and pivot-hung doors have different B dimensions from the same chart.
- Head clearance between the top of the door and the frame soffit must be confirmed before mortising. Most concealed holders show 1/16 inch of head clearance in the template. If the door is shimmed high or the frame is low, the arm will bind.
- Hollow metal doors require frame reinforcement at the jamb bracket location. Verify the reinforcement is in place before the frame is set.
- For doors with overhead closers, confirm that the closer arm sweep and the holder arm cutout on the door top do not overlap. The frame head has a fixed amount of usable space.
Fire Door Note
Concealed overhead stops are generally acceptable on fire-rated openings because they limit swing without holding the door open. However, any hold-open function on a fire door must use an electromagnetically released holder tied to the fire alarm system. A friction hold-open on a fire door is not acceptable under NFPA 80. If your schedule shows a concealed holder with a friction hold-open, confirm the opening's fire rating before specifying. When in doubt, specify the dead-stop-only configuration for rated openings and add an electromagnetic holder if hold-open is required.
