Magnetic door holders are one of the most common hold-open devices in schools, hospitals, and commercial corridors. But they are also one of the most frequently misconfigured pieces of hardware on rated openings. This guide explains how electromagnetic door holders must interface with a building fire alarm system, what the codes actually require, and where facilities and contractors run into trouble before an annual fire door inspection.
What Is a Magnetic Door Holder?
An electromagnetic door holder is a two-part device: a magnet body (mounted to the wall or floor) and an armature plate (mounted to the door face). When energized, the magnet grips the armature and holds the door open. When power is removed -- by fire alarm signal, manual test, or power failure -- the magnet releases and a separate door closer pulls the door shut and latches it.
The key word is separate. The holder does not close the door. It only releases it. A properly listed door closer must already be installed on the door for the assembly to function as intended under NFPA 80 and NFPA 101.
The Code Requirement Most Sites Overlook
NFPA 80 is explicit: hold-open devices on fire-rated doors are only permitted when the holder is released by an automatic fire detection system. A magnetic holder that is simply plugged into a wall outlet with no connection to the fire alarm panel does not comply -- regardless of how long it has been in service.
NFPA 101 reinforces this by requiring that automatic-closing doors close and latch upon signal from a smoke detector or the fire alarm system. Fusible link hold-open arms, by comparison, do not meet this requirement because they do not respond to smoke and do not allow smoke-compartment control.
What the Alarm Interface Actually Looks Like
- The fire alarm panel (or a listed smoke detector) is wired to interrupt power to the magnet upon alarm.
- The holder is fail-safe: power ON equals door held open; power OFF equals door released.
- A test switch (typically on the device or at the panel) allows field verification without triggering a full alarm.
- Maximum wire size for most holders in this class is 18 AWG -- confirm with the device data sheet.
- All wiring must comply with local electrical codes and ordinances.
Floor, Wall, or Recessed -- Choosing the Right Mount
Electromagnetic door holders are available in three basic configurations. Site conditions and finish requirements determine which type belongs on a given opening.
- Floor mounted: Projects up from the floor; suited to heavy doors where wall geometry does not align with the door face at the hold-open angle.
- Surface wall mounted: The most common retrofit option; fastens to the wall and reaches the door armature at 90 degrees or the specified hold-open angle.
- Recessed wall mounted: Low-profile or standard-profile versions that recess into a 2 x 4 x 1-1/2 inch junction box; preferred in healthcare and education interiors where exposed hardware projections are a safety or aesthetic concern.
Armature extension pieces are available when the door face does not reach the magnet body at the desired hold-open angle. Specify the extension at the time of order -- field-drilling a wall mount into a different position after the junction box is already set is a common and avoidable cost.
Holders vs. Closer-Holder Combinations
A standalone electromagnetic holder is the lowest-cost approach, but it depends entirely on the existing or specified door closer performing correctly every time. On high-traffic corridors in schools or hospital wings where the door is held open for most of the day, closer-holder combination units -- which integrate the closing mechanism and the electromagnetic release in a single housing -- eliminate the coordination dependency. They are also available in concealed-in-frame and concealed-in-door configurations where surface hardware conflicts with interior design standards.

Voltage, Wiring, and the Integration Scope Problem
Most electromagnetic holders operate at 12V DC, 24V AC/DC, or 120V AC -- many units are tri-voltage and accept all three from the same housing. That flexibility is useful, but it creates a coordination problem on the job: who runs the fire alarm interface wire?
In new construction, the fire alarm contractor typically provides conduit and wire from the panel or detector to the holder junction box, while the door hardware installer mounts and connects the device. On retrofit projects, that scope split is frequently undefined until the inspection fails. Establishing in writing -- before rough-in -- which trade owns the alarm interface circuit saves most of the disputes that arise at final inspection.
Common Field Problems Before Inspection
- Holder wired to a standard circuit with no fire alarm connection -- noncompliant regardless of listing.
- Closer missing or undersized -- holder releases but door does not latch; fails NFPA 80 positive latching requirement.
- Armature plate missing or misaligned -- door does not hold open at intended angle; closer sweeps door before occupant clears.
- No armature extension ordered -- magnet and plate do not make full contact; holding force reduced.
- Junction box not roughed in at holder location -- surface conduit added after finish work; flagged as deferred coordination by AHJ.
Getting the Specification Right
A complete specification for an electromagnetic holder on a fire-rated opening should identify: mount type (floor, surface wall, recessed), voltage, holding force, finish, armature extension if required, fastener kit, and -- critically -- the fire alarm interface requirement. Listing the holder as a door hardware item without a corresponding note in the electrical or fire alarm scope is how the coordination gap opens.
