What Adjustable Throat Frames Actually Do

An adjustable throat frame -- sometimes called a variable-depth frame or slip-in frame -- is engineered to accommodate a range of wall thicknesses rather than a single fixed dimension. The frame profile includes a telescoping or sliding section that allows the throat to be set in the field before the frame is anchored.

This is particularly valuable in the following scenarios:

  • Buildings where multiple partition systems are used and a single fixed-depth frame cannot cover every opening without special ordering
  • Renovation projects where confirmed wall depth differs from the original construction documents

A job with four or five different partition depths can mean four or five separate frame configurations in the schedule -- each requiring accurate field measurement before the order is placed.

Adjustable throat frames reduce that exposure by consolidating multiple throat dimensions into a single frame type that can be set on site. That said, they are not universal: each product line carries a defined adjustment range, and walls that fall outside that range still require a fixed-depth frame sized specifically for that condition. Always verify the manufacturer's stated range before specifying.

Healthcare and Life-Safety Considerations

On fire-rated openings, the frame must be part of a listed assembly. Adjustable or split-frame designs intended for fire-rated use must carry appropriate listings for the rated wall condition. Confirm with your supplier that the adjustable frame you are specifying is listed for the fire rating required at that opening -- not just for the overall depth range. Lead-lined and STC-rated assemblies add another layer of coordination, as specialty frame profiles for those applications have their own depth and seal requirements.

Ordering the Right Frame: What You Need to Confirm

Before you order any hollow metal frame for a variable-wall-thickness situation, confirm all of the following:

  • Actual finished wall thickness -- measure in the field, not from the drawings
  • Fire rating requirement at the opening -- rated and non-rated frames are not interchangeable
  • Frame profile type -- masonry (M), drywall (C), or drywall-masonry (CM) profiles each have different backbend and anchor systems; make sure the profile matches how the frame is being installed relative to wall construction sequence
  • Hardware preps -- closer reinforcement, strike, hinge, and flush bolt preps are cut to the frame's specific geometry; confirm all preps are compatible with the adjustable section
  • Adjustment range -- verify the frame's minimum and maximum throat setting covers your actual condition with margin to spare
