Why the Power Decision Happens at Rough-In, Not at Punch List

- Confirmation that the outlet location does not conflict with under-counter soap reservoir positions, drain traps, or ADA knee clearance requirements
- Verification with the GC that the electrical sub is on the restroom accessory sheet, which does not always happen automatically
If the electrical rough-in is missed or located incorrectly, the team is either cutting tile, relocating drains, or defaulting to batteries at the last minute. None of those outcomes are free.
When AC Power Is the Right Call
For most high-use commercial environments, AC power is the better long-term answer when the rough-in is planned correctly. The reasons are straightforward:
- No battery replacement labor. In a school with twenty restrooms or a hospital wing with forty dispenser heads, battery swaps become a measurable maintenance cost. AC eliminates that cycle entirely.
- Consistent dispensing performance. Battery voltage drops as cells discharge. AC-powered units maintain consistent motor speed and soap output across the full life of the refill, which matters in healthcare settings where controlled dose volume is expected.
- Lower long-term operating cost. Battery costs and labor add up fast in high-traffic buildings. Facilities that track this number typically find AC payback is relatively short on any restroom that sees heavy daily use.
Typical applications where AC power is worth the rough-in investment include:
- Hospital patient bathrooms and scrub sink areas
- K-12 school lavatories with daily cleaning staff on site
- Airport and transit restrooms with very high cycle counts
- Corporate or institutional restrooms where a polished, consistent appearance is required
When Battery Operation Makes More Sense
Battery-powered dispensers are not a fallback option — they are genuinely the right choice in specific situations:
- Retrofit or renovation without wall access. If the counter is already in and the wall is closed, adding electrical service is expensive and often disruptive. A battery unit installs in the same counter hole with no additional rough-in.
- Low-traffic locations. A single-occupancy restroom in a small retail space, a break room, or a private office suite may never run through enough dispenser cycles to justify electrical coordination costs.
- Temporary or leased space. Tenant improvement work where the buildout may change in a few years often benefits from the flexibility that battery units offer. No electrical commitment means easier reconfiguration.
- Projects where Division 26 scope is already locked. If the electrical budget is finalized and the restroom accessories were added late, battery operation avoids a change order fight.
Multi-Feed Systems Add Another Layer of Coordination
Some restroom designs use a centralized soap reservoir system, where a single large container below the counter feeds multiple dispenser heads above. Finish Coordination: One More Reason to Decide Early

Polished chrome, brushed nickel, and matte black are common options across major restroom accessory lines. A mismatch between the dispenser head, faucet, grab bars, and paper towel dispenser is a punchlist item that could have been avoided at submittal. The power-source decision and the finish decision belong on the same line of the accessory schedule.
Specifying It Right the First Time
The cleanest way to handle this decision on a project is to resolve the following before the accessory schedule ships:
- AC or battery, confirmed with the electrical sub
- Individual head or multi-feed configuration, confirmed with the GC on cabinet space
- Liquid or foam, confirmed with the facility end user
- Finish, confirmed against the faucet and accessory selections already approved
- Soap product, confirmed against the manufacturer's compatibility list
