System Operation: 

A basic mag lock system consists of an electromagnet mounted to the frame and a steel armature plate mounted to the door. 

• Door normally closed and locked by electromagnetic lock.
• Door released on exterior side by keypad.
• Door released on interior side by pushbutton. (Most buildings codes require 2 means of exited a door with a Mag Lock)
• Door released remotely by fire alarm or by loss of power

Operations Summary

• Continuous Power: The system requires a constant 12V or 24V DC power supply to remain locked. When energized, the magnet bonds to the armature plate with hundreds of pounds of force.
• Access Control: Authorized entry is typically managed by a keypad or proximity card reader that momentarily breaks the power circuit.
• Manual Release: For exiting, a dedicated "Request to Exit" (REX) device—such as a push-to-exit button—is used to drop power to the lock.
• Fail-Safe Nature: Because power is required to maintain the bond, these locks are inherently fail-safe. If power is lost or the fire alarm is triggered, the door automatically unlocks for safe egress.
• Monitoring: Basic kits often include an LED status indicator (Red for locked, Green for unlocked) to provide immediate visual confirmation of the door's state.
