Sargent 8217 BHW Asylum or Institutional Function Mortise Lockset - Ligature Resistant
The Sargent 8217 BHW is a specialized, ultra-high-security Grade 1 Ligature-Resistant Mortise Lockset engineered for the most demanding environments, including psychiatric hospitals, asylum wards, and high-risk correctional facilities. Built upon the legendary Sargent 8200 Series chassis, this lockset is designed for areas where absolute control over the opening is mandatory for patient and staff safety. The BHW trim utilizes sloped surfaces and a tapered design to minimize potential attachment points, serving as a critical component in suicide prevention and risk management strategies.
Absolute Institutional Control (ANSI F15)
The 8217 Asylum or Institutional function is designed for maximum security, ensuring that the door can never be left in an unlocked state by unauthorized persons.
- Double Keyed Security: The latchbolt is operated by a physical key from either side of the door. There is no thumbturn or toggle to allow manual locking or unlocking.
- Rigid Lever Design: Both the interior and exterior levers are permanently rigid. They do not retract the latch; the key performs all mechanical retraction.
- Permanent Locking Logic: This function ensures that the door is always secure from both directions. It is the primary choice for dividing wards or securing high-risk perimeter doors where movement must be strictly keyed.
- Deadlocking Latchbolt: Features a 3/4" throw stainless steel latchbolt with an auxiliary deadlatch to prevent "shimming" or forced manipulation of the latch when the door is closed.
Specialized BHW Ligature-Resistant Trim
The BHW trim is the industry standard for behavioral health safety, balancing a therapeutic "normative" aesthetic with rigorous institutional durability.
- Sloped & Tapered Surfaces: The BHW lever and escutcheon are expertly contoured to prevent the looping of cords, clothing, or bedsheets, significantly reducing the risk of ligature-related incidents.
- Gapless Construction: The integrated lever-to-escutcheon design eliminates the gaps found in standard hardware where strings or small metal objects could be wedged.
- Extreme Mechanical Life: The 8200 Series lock body is independently verified to exceed 14 million cycles, providing 14 times the standard service life required for Grade 1 certification.
- Tamper-Resistant Fasteners: All units are supplied with Torx® security screws to prevent unauthorized removal or tampering with the internal lock components.

Ordering & Installation Information
The Sargent 8217 BHW is a handed product. To ensure the ligature-resistant slopes are oriented correctly for safety, the direction of the door swing must be specified at the time of order. This hardware is designed to fit standard mortise door preparations and is compatible with Sargent High-Security Key Systems, including Degree® and Signature.

Special Note: The door handing information is needed upon order placement. If you are unsure of the handing of your door, please compare the picture below to your opening for clarification.
