Sargent 743-8 ETL Freewheeling Lever Exit Trim – Rim & SVR Trim

The Sargent 743-8 ETL is a heavy-duty mechanical outside lever trim designed for high-abuse and high-traffic commercial environments. Part of the Sargent 80 Series hardware family, this trim utilizes the ET escutcheon and L lever design, featuring a freewheeling mechanism. This "vandal-resistant" design allows the lever to rotate freely when locked, preventing intruders from using excessive torque to break the internal components. It is an ideal solution for schools, hospitals, and government buildings requiring secure, keyed access without sacrificing durability.
Mechanical Security and Functionality
The 743-8 ETL corresponds to Sargent Function 43 (ANSI 08), commonly known as "Classroom Function," which provides a reliable balance of security and passage.
- Freewheeling Vandal Resistance: When the trim is locked via the cylinder, the lever handle moves up and down without engaging the latch. This prevents the spindle from being snapped or forced by unauthorized persons, ensuring the hardware remains operational after an attempted breach.
- Key-Controlled Access: A standard mortise cylinder (sold separately) allows a keyholder to lock or unlock the lever. When unlocked, the lever functions as a standard entrance handle.
- Panic Egress Compliance: Regardless of whether the outside lever is locked, the interior exit device always allows for immediate, free egress. This ensures the opening meets all life-safety and fire code requirements.
- Fire-Rated Support: This trim is designed to work with UL fire-listed 80 Series devices, including the 8800 Rim and NB8700 SVR, supporting up to 3-hour fire ratings on appropriate openings.
