Replacing Surface Door Closers without re-drilling Holes in the Door – 22 Current Closer Screw Hole Patterns
Surface Mounted Closers are 80% of all Door Closers Sold and Replaced. If you do not want to re-drill the holes of the body of the closer then you need to match the existing closer’s mounting holes. Let’s assume you don’t find a manufacturer’s name but If you know the screw hole pattern dimensions of your existing closer than this list will be your next stop to find a manufacturer(s) that makes a similar closer.

The question remains – what to do when your door closer has been discontinued, along with the special screw hole pattern. If you do not want more holes in your door, then you can make a custom Retrofit steel plate with your special holes and one of the patterns below (trim off the machine screws so they don’t project further than the back of the plate)
9-1/16” x 3/4" – this is the most common door closer! 17 or more manufacturers have at least 1 closer with this screw hole pattern.

1” / 3” / 1” – Third most common screw hole pattern is the LCN 4040 closer pattern. 10 or more manufacturers have a closer with this screw hole pattern.
